I am a member of  Lance Miller, world champion of public Speaking email group.  Received an interesting note by him.

Dear Kamal

Many speakers I have watched and coached spoke like they were in a hurry to rush through their speech. They would share one point and then hurriedly rush to tell the next tidbit or point, and then next, etc. etc..

When coaching I address this by using the analogy that a speech is like a
5 Course Meal.  Each course needs to be enjoyed on its own.

If you were at dinner, you would think someone
was pretty rude if they ate each course as fast as they could and rushed to their next plate of food swallowing it whole as they went. Yet, many speakers speak in this manner, rushing from one story or point as if they feared that if they don't say "it" right now "it" will disappear!

There are as many ways to structure a speech as there are to structure a meal. And as in a meal, each thing you are saying should be delivered to the audience so they can understand and enjoy that specific point or concept of you speech, just as they would enjoy a delectable appetizer.

For example:

First Course - The Opening

Second Course - Set-up/Orientation

Third Course - The Conflict or Problem

Fourth Course - The Solution or Resolution

Fifth Course - The Conclusion or Close.

A speaker should relax and enjoy telling each part of his or hers story, each scenario, point or illustration all on its own. Let the audience have time to savor the bouquet of your words and the pairing of your stories.

Communicating each part of your story in a way that impacts the audience is like having the perfect bottle of wine with each meal.

Bon Appetit!

Sincerely,

Lance Miller
