The adorable 2,000-pound, 16x16-foot yellow house took to the skies with the aid of 300 weather balloons that grow to 8 feet tall when inflated. From top to bottom, the entire aircraft measured 10 stories high and reached an altitude of 10,000 feet. It flew for about an hour at dawn from a private airfield east of Los Angeles. Oh, and there were people (of the non-animated variety) aboard.
And if you're wondering how hard it can be to set a balloon-supported house aloft, well, "it was pretty hard," Paul Carson, the show's host, notes in the behind-the-scenes video below. "It was very difficult actually."
Pixar's 10th animated feature focuses on the fate of 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen, his house, and a wayward 8-year-old who happens by one day. Launched into the sky together by a cluster of balloons tied to the roof of Fredricksen's house, the two set off on what could safely be called a high-flying adventure.
It took the National Geographic team of scientists, engineers, and balloon pilots two weeks to pull off their version of the "Up" house--from the initial assignment through planning, building, and rigging the house and setting it aloft in the clear skies to cheers down below.
When one of these high-altitude surveillance balloons entered our airspace over the continental United States earlier in the month, I gave the order to shoot it down as soon as it would be safe to do so. The military advised against shooting it down over land because of the sheer size of it. It was the size of multiple school busses, and it posed a risk to people on the ground if it was shot down where people lived.
Consider the last Zeppelin airship, the LZ 130 Graf Zeppelin II. This huge 1930s aircraft blew up to a volume of over 7 million cubic feet. This gave it enough power to lift over 250 tons, which is easily more than a small house weighs, even including the weight of the foundations. The LZ 130 was designed to use hydrogen, not helium, but it switched to non-combustible helium, and that worked just fine.
National Geographic gave it a go. They built a wooden house, and attached 300 helium weather balloons, each around 12 feet tall. The house took flight, successfully reaching a height of 10,000 feet. Best of all, no one involved in the stunt died.
Since it was the balloons that obviously drew him to the movie in the first place, I decided that I wanted to make him a t-shirt on which he could proudly display the balloons that he loves so much. My idea was to get him involved in the process, so I figured the best way to do that would be to use a stamp for the balloons and to let him help me stamp them on his shirt.
I had considered making a stencil and airbrushing the house as I usually do (I like how the paint is much softer when airbrushed as opposed to applying with a paintbrush). I also considered cutting a house out of iron-on vinyl with my Silhouette Cameo.
In the end, though, I decided to just paint a house on the shirt freehand because I wanted it to be multi-colored. I figured that fit more with the way the movie went, too. She had painted a colorful mural of her house at Paradise Falls over her fireplace, so I decided to paint it too.

October 1, 2023-April 30, 2024 the rental process will change a little. Instead of our summer hours of renting from 8 a.m.-9 p.m. The rentals will be for 24 hour periods during regular business hours (10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Mon.-Sat.).
