Hi fellow gardeners,
I am concerned that our garden isn't flourishing like it should.  When I go to water on Sundays, it looks like it hasn't been watered recently.  I don't know who is supposed to water on Saturdays but I am concerned that the garden isn't getting enough water.  It is a particular concern now that we are having warmer weather.
I also looked online about using horse manure which we used this planting season.  The article said that it is not the best fertilizer for a garden and if you use to much it can make the garden unsuitable for most plants.  This is because it is high in salts.
I am just trying to figure out what the problem is and get some feedback from all of you.
Sharon :)

Hi Sharon,

Yes, it is important to make sure we keep the garden well watered. The first tomato bed we planted does not look so fantastic, but the second one is doing reasonably well I think.
I think we just have different crops that flourished this time around: the green beans have e.g. done real well and we are starting to get some nice cucumbers (the variety is a little different than last year, but they are yummy). I have had 1 tasty zucchini, but I am not sure how much they are producing.
It is hard to tell what happened to the first tomato bed, but  consistent watering is definitely key, and we have to be careful not to uncover the roots of the plants when we do so (some of the tomato plants look like they have lost some dirt by their roots).
Maybe we can get together for another work day in a couple of weeks to add on to the garden. How about trying for Sunday morning August 26th?
Our funds are getting a little low, so if people want to donate (either $20 or seedlings) that would be great. Also let me know what you would like to see, I can go and get more plants.

Happy gardening,
Nathalie

I can do August 26 in the morning. I have a $20  gift certificate to Island Seed & Feed that I can donate.
To Sharon's issue with the manure, I can't speak to the effectiveness or not, but I do know that we didn't use manure when we planted the first tomato bed that is not thriving, or when we planted the two little yellow scallop squash plants.  So I don't think that can be the issue.  The middle bed looks like it is doing well, and those long prickly cucumbers are delicious!  I took some brussel sprouts and that can probably be removed, but it is such a thick stalk I think I need a machete, which I don't have.

Hello gardeners,
Yes, the manure has something to do with it! Years ago I had a gardener who was supposed to put in a new lawn
at my ex husbands house. He used manure and it killed the grass. He had to come and remove the manure which
smelled pretty bad. I then got a different person and he without manure created a nice fresh growing grass area
in the front of the house. It was a real nightmare at the time. Manure works in some cases but I think we might not
use it in our garden to be safe.
I will put $20.00 toward the garden in the next few days!

I can come Sun., Aug. 26th.  Would it be 9 a.m. as usual?  I'll get $20. to you.  I don't know what to suggest to plant in late summer.  Do you?  Sharon :)

Hello, I am available from 9AM to about 10.30AM. After that I am meeting my friend Cat at the
market to purchase fruit and then we go to her house to make jam.
I will also bring $20.00 to you then.

Hello All-

Just a note supporting the gardeners.

I'm interested in knowing what everybody thinks about removing bushes, improving automatic watering, tilling new areas, making improvements that the HOA might support, or anything related.

Bringing forth solid ideas that have group support is important.  Also Eva volunteered to liaison with the Green Committee.

Regards,  John
