Subject: [mobile-society] Mobile adoption by GDP
To: mobile-...@googlegroups.com

Hello all,

Inspired by Richard Heek's visualization, I have tried to put together a table showing when different groups of countries started to get the mobile phone. The table is organized into 5 groups of countries based on GDP/capita. The countries are ranged from the highest to the lowest countries in terms of GDP/capita.

The data shows that chage in phone subscriptions per 100 persons from one year to the next starting in 1998 and going to 2008. ITU data is the basis for the analysis.

The chart shows that in the early period it was the highest two groups of GDP countries that were adopting. Around 2000 this stopped. That is when the internet bubble poped. A couple of years later the third, fourth and fifth groups started to take off. As in Richard's visualization, the period around 2005 is when things started to happen for the countries with the lowest GDP. This is likely because the high GDP countries were fully built out and the operators and equipment manufacturers were starting to look around for other opportunities.

I would be interested in any comments.
