Environmental Policy and Eco-feminism in China and India: Wednesday, November 30th from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Fairfield University, Multimedia Room, DiMenna-Nyselius Library, Fairfield. Please join Fairfield University’s Program on the Environment for a panel discussion of global environmental issues among women in China and India. Dr. Danke Li will discuss her interviews with Liao Xiaoyi, winner of the Sophie Prize in 2000, awarded to her by President Bill Clinton for her efforts in building sustainable housing in China. Dr. Gita Rajan will discuss environmentally conscious companies among women in India, who are entering the global economy in a time of environmental crisis. The talk is free and open to the public. Land Use and Sustainable Development Conference: Friday, December 2nd, 2011 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Pace Law School’s New York State Judicial Institute, 78 North Broadway, White Plains NY. Proponents of sustainable development have been dealt a tough hand by current economic conditions. This year’s conference will focus on how tough economic times have changed the feasibility of some land use and development strategies. Sessions include the remediation of problem properties, the revitalization of failed projects, redevelopment readiness, fair and affordable housing, office park rezoning, and cost and energy efficiency projects, specifically compact mixed-use developments that feature transit, walkability, and amenities. Take a Winter Hike at the Newman Poses Nature Preserve: The Aspetuck Land Trust (ALT) maintains 43 trailed nature preserves in Easton, Weston, Fairfield, and Westport and is supported by over 1,000 local members. Recently, the ALT helped preserve the beautiful 39-acre Newman Poses property. Paul Newman lived near the property and donated a large portion of the land to the town. The parcel also includes land sold to the town by Lillian Poses, a neighbor and friend of Mr. Newman. It is the only public memorial approved by the family as a way to honor the actor and philanthropist. The nature preserve can be accessed off Bayberry Lane in Westport (north of Easton Road/Rte 136).
