I need your help today. Could you please take a moment to send your Senator
a quick note?

Here is why.

In 2011, it's estimated that $700 million of Federal transportation funds
will be spent on bicycling and walking. This is less than 2 percent of the
total Transportation budget. In 2012 that figure might be $00.00.
Yesterday the U.S. House of Representatives voted on a six-month "clean"
extension of the federal transportation bill ("SAFETEA-LU"). This is good
news as it protects the current funding until March.
But the Senate will be voting shortly (today or tomorrow).
Unfortunately, Senator Coburn (R-OK) is proposing a bill to Congress which
eliminates the federal Transportation Enhancements program - the primary
funding source for the past 20 years for bike lanes, trails, bike racks on
buses, bike education etc. This isn't safe or smart; it's not good for the
economy or the environment; this is bad health policy and bad transportation
policy. But they are going to try because they don't think bicycling
matters. Coburn has threatened to filibuster until he gets his way.

The League of American Bicyclists, America Bikes, Safe Routes to Schools,
and Rails to Trails are all asking us to contact our Senators Today and urge
them to support continued funding for biking and walking.

It's very easy and only takes three minutes to send a note. Just go to the
League's website and enter your zip code. They will provide you with a form
letter to sign.

If you can activate your friends and encourage them to act today, that would
also be VERY helpful.
