Hello Fairfax Little League Families,

By now, most of you have probably heard about the tragic incident that
occurred last night to our friends with Spotsylvania Little League.
Two little leaguers were struck by lightning shortly after umpires had
cleared the field; a 12 year old died, and an 11 year old remains in
critical condition this morning.

Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and teammates involved,
and we have formally sent our condolences to the leaders of
Spotsylvania Little League.

This tragedy is a reminder about our local safety rules. Each umpire
and coach is instructed to suspend a game if lightning is seen
anywhere near the field----yes, even if it appears miles away. (And
there are times when it may seem overly cautious, but we know that
storms move very quickly and can put your son or daughter in harm's
way in a flash.)

***But here's the most important part: When games are suspended or
called due to lightning, please make sure your kids and siblings get
to a car as soon as possible. If this means leaving gear in the
dugout, so be it. Remember, no lingering in dugouts, under shelters,
on playgrounds, and no trips to the snack bar. Pile everyone into a
car and wait out the storm.

Thanks for heeding this advice, and thanks for making this a wonderful
league with so many terrific families and volunteers!

All the best,

Mike McCarthy
