The Ameraucana is my favorite breed for it's friendliness and
beautiful blue egg color.
“Ameraucanas” are first and foremost BLUE EGG layers. They must have
“pea combs”, and be bearded and muffed and tailed, and cannot have any
tufts. They also must have slate blue legs, and red ear lobes (females
pale). There has been a definite relationship established between the
“Pea Comb” gene and the “Blue Egg” gene. Both these genes have been
shown to be carried on the same chromosome, and thus closely related.
The Aracauna breed are tailless and have the distinguishable ear
tufts. I have read that they originated from Chile. I have found the
Aracaunas are hit and miss with what they look like or egg color. They
are also not as friendly.
If you have a small garden you might want to try bantams. They have
less impact when scratching in your flower beds. My favorite is the
Mille Fleur. Very friendly. Our favorite bird "Flicka" would fly right
into your arms when you called her.
