Former Slave to speak Nov 29

Students Making Trade Fair is cosponsoring a slavery awareness
event. Beatrice Fernando is a former slave that will be speaking
on November 29 at 7pm at Hillel (located at 2020 West University
Avenue.)

A brief background of Beatrice Fernando:
In the 1980s, Beatrice Fernando was enslaved in Lebanon.
Tricked into thinking she would be working as a housemaid,
Beatrice arrived from her home country of Sri Lanka to a horrific
surprise. She was held captive, beaten, imprisoned and starved by
slave masters.
After months of this treatment, Beatrice was mentally and
physically exhausted. Keeping in mind her 2-year-old son, she
finally set her sights on escaping. The desperate moves she made
next are as unbelievable as they are inspirational.
Beatrice now works as an abolitionist in Massachusetts.
Come listen as she shares her story with the University of Florida
community.
