Call of Duty: Modern Warfare brings back the classic game mode: Drop Zone. Drop Zone shares similarities with Hardpoint and other objective game modes with two distinct differences: the only way to earn Killstreaks is by holding the objective and you earn additional points for each player inside the drop zone.
Drop Zone is a team objective mode where players battle to hold objectives to win. Players earn points by being inside the drop zone. The first team to reach the required point total or hold the most points when the time expires is the winner. Killstreaks can only be earned via care packages that continually deploy while the drop zone is held.
You earn points for EACH team member in the drop zone. Meaning the more players inside the zone, the more points per second that you earn. The zone moves around the map and is designated by a Care Package marker and red smoke.
A Care Package can contain any Killstreak giving each one the potential to be game changing. However, you have to capture a Care Package which takes a little bit of time. Ideally more than one player is inside the zone, so one person can get the Care Package while the other person defends. If not consider using the Care Package or Smoke equipment as cover while you collect the goods.
The Construction zone that connects to Apartments overlooks parts of the Main Street, Playground, Laundromat, Hotel, and exit points from the Backyard and Tire Shop. A power position with that much visibility may be crucial to command when the objective falls to that side of the map. Consider locking down Construction and giving your teammates callouts on enemy locations to hold the objective longer.
3. Rotation: The objective moves in Drop Zone, so you should too. Watch the clock and consider having some of your squad rotate out of the drop zone before it moves. This might help your team secure the next drop zone or potentially stop a wave of enemy attackers.

Call of Duty: Warzone[b] was a free-to-play battle royale video game developed by Raven Software and Infinity Ward, and published by Activision. The game was released on March 10, 2020, for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One as a part of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) and was subsequently connected to 2020's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and 2021's Call of Duty: Vanguard, but does not require purchase of any of the aforementioned titles.[1] Warzone allows online multiplayer combat among 150 players and features both cross-platform play and cross-platform progression between the three aforementioned titles.
At launch, the game featured two main game modes: Battle Royale and Plunder. Warzone introduces a new in-game currency system that can be used at "Buy Stations" in and around the map. "Loadout Drops" are a key in-game object allowing players to access and switch between their customized classes and are obtainable through purchase with the Cash currency.[2] Players may also use Cash to purchase items such as "killstreaks" and gas masks. Cash can be found by looting buildings and killing players that have cash on them. At launch, Warzone only offered Trios, a squad capacity of three players; Solos, Duos and Quads were eventually added to the game via post-launch updates.
Upon release, Warzone received generally favorable reviews from critics. Warzone was downloaded by six million people within 24 hours of its release; by April 2021, the game surpassed 100 million downloads.[3]
A sequel, titled Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0, was released on November 16, 2022. A mobile version of Warzone is also in development.[4][5] In June 2023, Activision announced that Call of Duty: Warzone servers would be shut down on September 21, 2023 to focus development on Warzone 2.0.[6]
Warzone is the second main battle royale installment in the Call of Duty franchise, following the "Blackout" mode of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Warzone differs from Black Ops 4 by reducing reliance on equipable gadgets and instead encouraging the accumulation of a new in-game currency called "Cash".[7] The game supports up to 150 players in a single match, which exceeds the typical "100 players" size that is seen in other battle royale titles.[8]
At launch, Warzone featured two primary game modes: Battle Royale and Plunder.[7] These game modes were initially playable in a squad capacity of three players ("Trios"); post-launch updates made the modes playable in other squad sizes, such as Solos, Duos and Quads.[9] In addition to Battle Royale and Plunder, several new game modes, including various limited-time modes and the "Resurgence" game mode, have been introduced throughout the course of the game's life cycle.[10] Warzone has also been used to reveal upcoming Call of Duty titles through similar limited-time gamemodes.[11][12]
In the Plunder mode, teams have to search for stacks of Cash scattered around the map to accumulate $1 million. Once found or if time is almost up, the game goes into overtime, multiplying all Cash sums by 1.5. The team who has gathered the most money when the clock runs out is declared the winner. Players respawn automatically in this gamemode. Players spawn with custom loadouts, similar to regular multiplayer modes.[15]
Resurgence, a mode introduced with the integration of content from Black Ops Cold War into Warzone, plays similarly to Battle Royale; however, upon death, players are respawned into the match as long as there is at least one squadmate alive in their team. If the entire squad is wiped, they are eliminated from the match. In solo modes, each player is given a respawn timer to wait out before they can respawn again. The Gulag is not employed in Resurgence modes.[10]
Verdansk was the original map featured in Warzone for the content seasons of Modern Warfare and Black Ops Cold War. It was themed after the fictional city shown in Modern Warfare's campaign and multiplayer modes. It is divided into five main sectors that are further divided into zones, each with a unique point of interest. The map is based on the real-life Donetsk city.[16]
An updated version of the map, titled "Verdansk '84", was released in April 2021 alongside the third post-launch season for Black Ops Cold War; it was unveiled after the nuclear destruction of its modern-day counterpart.[17] The majority of structures and locations were rethemed and revisited, along with global touch-ups across the entire map. The map featured seven new locations, five revamped locations,[18] the removal of several structures and obstacles, and the addition of a new centerpiece, the Grid Radar Array.[19] Several new locations and points of interest were added to the map as the integrated seasons of Cold War and Warzone progressed. These included Nakatomi Plaza, survival camps, CIA outposts,[20] several satellite crash sites, and "Red Doors".[21] Also featured were new global weapon loadout changes from Modern Warfare to Cold War, with weapons from the former still being accessible via Loadout Drops.[22][23]
Caldera was a World War II-themed island map, released with the first post-launch season for Call of Duty: Vanguard in December 2021, replacing Verdansk as the primary map for Battle Royale and Plunder modes. The map is characterized by dense forests, caves, and large water-based areas.[27] Caldera remained as the only playable map within the original Warzone, following the release of its sequel, Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0, up until the game's shutdown.[28][6]
Warzone's story is intertwined with the seasonal narratives of Modern Warfare, Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard. Verdansk is used as a common setting across various multiplayer maps in Modern Warfare, while Rebirth Island is inspired by locations and stories in previous Black Ops games. Caldera and Fortune's Keep complement Vanguard's seasonal story.[30][31][32]
Warzone was released on March 10, 2020, following a series of glitches and leaks in the preceding month. The existence of the game had been leaked a month prior by a post on Reddit, and a software glitch that same month briefly allowed players to view an early version of the launch map, Verdansk. On March 8, 2020, two days before release, YouTube content creator Chaos published an 11-minute video, featuring pre-release gameplay of the title. The video was removed, and on March 9, Warzone's publisher, Activision, officially announced that the game would be released on March 10.[8][14] In March 2022, Activision announced that they were developing a mobile version of Warzone.[5]
On March 11, 2020, Activision announced that Warzone had been downloaded by six million people in the first 24 hours.[34] On March 13, 2020, the official Call of Duty Twitter account announced that Warzone had crossed 15 million players earlier in the day.[35] On April 10, 2020, Activision announced that Warzone had surpassed over 50 million downloads in its first month.[36] By April 2021, Warzone reached more than 100 million downloads worldwide.[37]
