Live Map is a browser-based version of the operational Waze maps. It displays current traffic and reports from Wazers using their client app. It is commonly used by map editors to view the navigation instructions that will be provided to the client app when debugging map issues.
The Indoor maps feature is useful for those who want to navigate large airports or malls and of course, Google Maps tightly integrates with lots of other Google tools such as Gmail, Calendar, and Photos.
Unlike Google Maps, Waze has created a culture of user engagement. Waze generates many of its maps by using GPS to track "the movements of its nearly 50 million users," according to Bits. A third of Waze users share "information about slowdowns, speed traps and road closures, allowing Waze to update suggested routes in real time [and its] most dedicated fans can also edit the maps directly to improve their accuracy," writes Bits.
The Waze Map Editor can be very intuitive to use for most new map editors, however it is important to understand things that are not necessarily visible when editing. In some cases, what you don't know can really hurt the maps. Please read through the links to familiarize yourself with the contents.
Fortunately both services let you save maps offline for later use, though Google Maps is more upfront about it. Google Maps' Offline maps feature lets you select an area of the map, and download all the available data within it. Previously you could save individual routes, though this no longer appears to be the case.
Google Maps provides more details and information on locations on its maps. Users tend to add missing information and Google Maps is their first-go-to when listing their business locations and such. Google Maps also offers users the ability to download maps to their storage for offline usage. This is quite useful when travelling or exploring newer places as you can download the necessary maps in advance.
Google Map advertising is another form of advertising based on a geographic location. This capability can be turned on by connecting your Google My Business listing to your Google Ads campaigns, allowing you to have ads right in the maps section of search that correspond with your other Google Ads. Along with Google Maps being used on a desktop device for directions, the App has over 1 billion downloads, and on the app, you can bid for the single placement for the advertising slot that appears over the organic results. Organic results are also important so please also see information on our Local SEO section with more information on the Google My Business Listing.
When it comes to maps and navigation, you probably want something that gets you from point A to B as quickly as possible and avoids traffic, police, or accidents. And while there are many options available, I switched from Google Maps to Waze, and I'm not going back.
Absolutely. Well, yes and no. While Google Maps certainly has more features, tons of map data, different terrain levels, and endless information, it depends on what you need. Unlike Waze, Google Maps offers walking and biking directions, location reviews, and several helpful little features. Google Maps has slowly added some of Waze's crowd-sourced data into its maps, and I'll occasionally get alerts for speed traps and such. However, it's inconsistent, rarely accurate, and out of date far too fast.
