Hey.
I'm actually the inverse of you at the moment. I'm reading a lot more
DC comics with a smattering of Marvel. My Marvel comics are Runaways
(which you already mentioned), Ms. Marvel which I am kinda soldiering
through until they bring Carol back, and I'm just coming up on the end
of the Wizard of Oz miniseries which really reminded me of some of my
favorite stories from back when I was reading Heavy Metal.
On the DC side of things, I've been loving on Gail Simone's work in
both Wonder Woman and Secret Six.She has a way of handling shades of
grey in ethics from both a good guy and bad guy stand point that I
find resonates with me.
I started reading comics with DC's 52 series (starting back in 2006)
and much of my current reading still follows the threads of those
characters. This week I picked up Detective Comics which has been
taken over by the new Batwoman. I'm actually less interested in
Batwoman than I am in the Question(Renee Montoya) backup in it. I've
been resisting getting too much into the other Batman stuff. The
Battle of the Cowl stuff with Dick Greyson taking over the roll of
Batman has been interesting and well done but my budget can't handle a
full descent into the Bat mythos. Unlike with Steve Rogers, Bruce
Wayne has never been truely considered 'dead', but the question
remains as to where/when he is and what roll he will play when he
comes back to the current time.
Other 52 related books include Booster Gold (Time Travel always rocks
in my book), Adam Strange (which has taken an odd tactic by doing a
series of mini-series but it might as well be an ongoing but I'm
enjoying the space mythology thing they're doing), Animal Man (which
I'll be likely dropping soon due to excessive Wangst).
People had complaints about the new Powergirl ongoing but I enjoyed it.
Outside of Marvel and DC, I've been enjoying Buffy, Umbrella Academy,
and Empowered. Buffy has been starting to go down hill lately but not
so bad I'm prepared to drop it just that it has more moved into the
grind of the 'final battle' rather than the quirkier little side tales
it was telling earlier. Umbrella Academy is by one of the guys from My
Chemical Romance which is probably how he got his foot in the door. I
like it through for its rather quirky/goth take on the Superhero
genre. Empowered is basically an ecchi retelling of The Greatest
American hero with the character of Ralph being replaced with a curvy
insecure blonde who goes by the code name 'Empowered'. Its moved from
what was basically a few commission sketches for a fanboy to a book
where I actually shed tears at the end of the latest book. Highly
recommend.
