Seems to me that it would be helpful to have a chart showing where
everyone is in time. Copy, Paste and Edit it until it looks right.
(You might also note if you are working the night shift or some other
oddity that could confuse things)

Here's a world map of time zones.

wouldn't it be good to have a map on frapper (
http://www.frappr.com/pedromarkun ) or something similar?

Hi Pedro. Are you blogging for this course?

Artie,

trying to. I'm actually spinning of some of the discussions in my blog,
but I was writing in portuguese ( http://blog.markun.com.br/ ) cuz I
find it difficult to use other languages in writing on subjective topics
such as defining communities.

Don't forget there are translation tools that we can use to read blogs in a different language to our own. The end result may not be perfect but you should be able to make enough sense of what is being said:

You know I read the title of this topic and throught you meant "where
everyone is in their thinking" or "where everyone is in terms of
understanding the course content" or where "everyone is in terms of
completing the activities". It's a pity that with all the ability of
these web 2 and 3 technologies we can't use them more to show such
things. I do know that there are some systems such as LAMS that have a
visual representation of where students are in completing the learning
activities. Of course LAMS is used to develop highly structured
sequences of activities which makes representing where people are up
to easier. However it does raise the issue of understanding "where
people are up to" in their conceptual thinking. Does anyone have any
tool or suggestions as to how to determine this other than traditional
assessment???

Thanks group!

Maybe we can move this discussion over to the "Keeping up with the
Times" thread?

http://groups.google.com/group/facilitating-online-communities/browse_thread/thread/c01332b556ed1a9d

What we are talking about now has a general effect upon this whole
course and all of the projects. The blog project is not going to fly
for now unless we can organize according to platform.

Hi Andrew,

It might help us in organzing for the conference, if we knew what time
zone you are in.

Here's a world map of time zones.

BIG GIGANTIC OOPS!

Ignore that request to move the discussion to another thread. We are
in the right thread for talking about time management issues. I sent
that post by mistake. :(

progress with."

Artie says: That's fine for starters but you will need a co-
coordinator to do that. Once we get people organized according to
time, we can then begin to establish close parameters on what is a
"meeting"? What is a "member"? And other definitions. A synchronous
meeting helps to establish who is a member. But a constitution can
help us defione that with more exactness.

Artie says: There we have a problem because I am not trained to do
conversions. We might organize a Clocks and Times workshop. Your
meeting would be a good conclusion to a project in the "Clocks and
Time Workshop". We could use such appointments as a tast of our
ability to understand time.

I wonder if you use an RSS News reader Andrew and if so, what is missing in that in terms of getting an idea of where everyone is up to (assuming you actually need such an overview more than you need small, quality connections). The weekly schedule for this course is simple (I thought). Read material and post references and thoughts to your blog. Through tis action and the use of RSS we get quite an in depth overview of people's progress as opposed to markers. From my point of view, I have a very clear picture of where everyone is up to by reading their blogs. No post = no progress, post = progress, post with links, references, reflection and discussion = excellent progress (as per the assignment 1 description on the wiki). If you need an over view of everyone's propress, there are a number of simple tools you can use to manage content yourself - especially useful if you were to attempt running a course like this. Tools such as tagging and bookmarking based on weekly topics will give you a quick over view of progress each week.

If you knew me better Andrew, you would know that I preference the use of freely available, popular and easy to use tools that people will have use for and access to beyond formal learning. The only tool we use that falls outside that general criteria is Elluminate - most people don't have free access to that. I would prefer to use Skype or Flash Meeting or a number of other web conferencing tools (such as Nellie's suggestion) but am reluctant to do so with a number of participants being on dial up connection speeds. LAMS also falls outside that criteria in my view.

Quick survey of people on the street:

Who's heard of blogs? wikis? cool! you've heard of them - we are half way there. You haven't heard of LAMS (Blackboard, Moodle, Elluminate)? We are behind already...

There's 17 names on this chart. If you are going to participate in any
projects, you may want to inform people of your zone.
