Hi guys,

I have started to think about the trip to Ben Lui scheduled for next week.

There are couple of options

1) We could take the route which is described in the most of books. Some
details can be found here
http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/argyll/ben-lui.shtml
That's rather easy route. About 10 km long and ascent is just over
1000m. The only problem is crossing the river Lochy at the begining.
There is no bridge. I have done this route few years ago and we were
lucky and watter level was rather low. However, the river Lochy is not a
little stream and it could easily get waste deap and vicious.

2) We could approach Ben Lui from east from Dalrigh. However, that's
about 7km one way. There is nice flat track which can be easily cycled
but I don't want to suggest that unless everyone is happy to bring a
bike. I can possibly bring one spare and believe Lawrence could have
one, too. We could certainly walk all the approach but that would be
rather long day.

3) We can pick another hill in the area. Let's say Ben Cruachan and/or
Stob Diamh.

So, let me know if you are coming and what would be your prefference.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

Hi Tomas,

I can't make your walk as I'm in Aberdeen next weekend unfortunately, but your suggestion of biking if you do it from Dalrigh is a good one - I've done the walk in and out and the return leg seems to go on forever! You would get to the pub/coffee shop a lot quicker with a bike!

Cheers,
Simon

Tomas

I'm OK with either route but would definitely want to use a bike if we go from Dalrigh.
If there is still some snow on Ben Lui then ice axes will be required. I'm sure Anne remembers the problems we had 2 years ago on a snow patch leading to us abandoning the climb? That was a similar time of year I think. Any snow at all and Ben Lui becomes a tricky winter climb.

Kind regards,

Tomas, I too have crossed the river and we cannot assume this for our walk. There used to be a bridge downstream that added a couple of km. I am happy to bike it and as you suggest have at least 1 spare bike for others.

David,

I am aware of that and will have spare crampons and axe to lend if
necessary. I will prepare some alternative routes just in case we don't
have enough equipment or stamina. There is plenty of hills around Ben Lui.

I have as good as done Ben Lui so would be OK to do another. Getting my bike there would be difficult since my car is too small to fit it in and if others cannot get bikes there then it might not be so good for them.
As Tom says there are other hills to go up.

Lloyd
