Please see email below with information on the WHO Report /Health for
the world’s adolescents/.
Executive summary attached
Dear colleagues,
As many of you may be aware, WHO has just released their Report, /Health
for the world’s adolescents/, which is an engaging
multi-mediapresentation available at
who.int/adolescent/second-decade
<
http://who.int/adolescent/second-decade>. If you have a chance, it is
worth looking through the website. (kindly also find the Executive
Summary attached).
The Report will be presented to Member States at the 2014 World Health
Assembly and addresses a broad range of health needs for young people
age 10-19, providing new data on trends, as well as determinants that
influence health outcomes and behaviors.
We have highlighted below, some of the key new data presented in the report:
*1. Overall Trends: *There were an estimated 1.3 million adolescent
deaths in 2012, most from preventable causes. Mortality is higher in
boys than in girls, and in older (15-19) adolescents than younger
(10-14) adolescents.
*2. Maternal Mortality: *Maternal mortality is the second cause of
death among adolescent girls 15-19, with suicides as the leading cause.
(Prior to this Report, maternal mortality was recognized as the leading
cause of death for adolescent girls 15-19). Deaths due to complications
during pregnancy and childbirth among adolescents have declined
significantly since 2000, most notably in regions where maternal
mortality is the highest, including South-East Asia (57% decline),
Eastern Mediterranean (50% decline), and African Regions (37% decline).
*3. HIV: *Estimates suggest that numbers of deaths due to HIVare rising
in the adolescent age group, and primarily in the African Region, at a
time when HIV-related deaths decreased in all other population groups.
When both sexes are taken into account, HIV is the second cause of death
among adolescents, with road injuries as the leading cause.
*4. Infectious Diseases: *Substantial numbers of adolescents still die
from diarrhoeal disease and lower respiratory tract infections, which
rank second and fourth as causes of death among 10-14 year olds. When
combined with meningitis these conditions account for 18% of all deaths
in this age group – little change from the 19% of deaths these
conditions accounted for in 2000.
*5. NCDs and Health Behaviour: *In countries with available survey data,
the WHO analysis shows that fewer than one in every four adolescents
meets recommended guidelines for physical activity and in some
countries, as many as one in every three adolescents is obese. The
Report highlights the importance of a life-course approach to support
adolescent development.
*6. Mental Health: *Mental health takes a large toll during adolescence
with suicide, ranking number three among global causes of death during
adolescence. In the small number of countries with survey data, five to
fifteen percent of younger adolescents ages 13-15 reported a suicide
attempt in the 12 months prior to the survey. As many as half of all
mental health disorders begin by age 14, though most go unrecognized and
untreated.
The report offers information across a wide range of adolescent health
and development issues, which can complement the recent analysis in the
ICPD review report, and will provide further foundation to inform our
agenda surrounding adolescents and youth.
Best regards,
Bruce
