Hi folks,

Sorry that my first post here was so generalized. Was away from computer and find it difficult to type on my phone.

My situation is this:

I am running FaceGen on a Mac with Parallels running Windows 10. The program appears to work well under this setup. I am able to generate an .FG file and save it, so that it is accessible on the Mac side (where Daz is installed/running.)

I would like to know, if anyone has any experience with a similar setup, if it is possible to then work with the saved .FG over on the Mac side.

I am new to these programs, but I believe I understand that FaceGen is ideally supposed to produce something that goes into the content library of Daz. It then becomes a slider that will morph the Genesis models in Daz?

I guess I am looking for a bit of a kickstart on how to get this to work, if possible and someone has a bit of patience to help. I apologize if these seem like stupid questions to more experienced users, but I have searched and searched to the point where I'm not even sure I'm using the correct search terms to find an answer.

  • I guess the first question should be whether what FaceGen produces works with the default figures in Daz Studio? Or is there a model I need to purchase so that it will work?
  • Does the .FG file need to be converted to something else before it will work in Daz?
  • Is there a way to get the Export feature on the Windows side to work with the Content Library on the Mac side? If not, is it just a matter of saving the .FG file and copying it to the library?
  • Am I just banging my head against the wall by wanting to use the Mac side of my setup as much as possible, rather than just giving in and installing the Windows version of Daz?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi JD,

I will talk about FaceGen Artist which is the program used to create custom faces for Daz Studio Genesis 1,2,3 and 8 figures (latter 2 require pro version).

It's a Windows-only program that is designed to work with Daz Studio Windows version.

.FG files are FaceGen internal files to store the face and have nothing to do with Daz.

Exporting is done from the 'File' -> 'Export' tab and choosing the tab for the desired figure.

Exporting writes files into one of you Daz Content Directories (the program lets you choose which) from which Daz Studio for Windows can load them.

The paths for the Daz Content Directories are found in the Windows Registry under:

\\Software\Daz\Studio4\NumContentDirs
\\Software\Daz\Studio4\ContentDir#

So if you goal is to get FaceGen Artist under Parallels working directly with the MacOS version of Daz Studio, you will need to discover your MacOS Daz Content Directory, then manually add it to the Windows registry (using a path accessible from within parallels) and hope that the formats are the same between the Windows and MacOS versions of Daz Studio.

Please let us all know how it works out !

Best wishes,

Thanks Andrew, missed the email somehow.

I’ll give it a go and try to let you know if it works.

Could Facegen add support for both keys?

Software\DAZ\Studio4
Software\DAZ\Studio4PublicBuild

Such as, if Studio4 doesn't exist, then use Studio4PublicBuild.

Studio4PublicBuild is used for betas.  Some people may have the beta installed, but not the general release.
So, you can assume they both point to the same content folders.

Yes, we will do exactly that in the next release.

Hey JD, I know you posted this two years ago lol but
I was wondering if the method FaceGen Guru suggested worked for you? I'm basically in the exact same scenario, or rather deciding whether or not I should purchase FaceGen so I can approach this method, if the .fg file works the same way via Parallels on the Mac version of Daz.
Were you able to load your finished Daz model just as a regular genesis model w the facegen face already on it?

Thank you so much for your help! :D
