International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
The International Day for the Elimination of
Racial Discrimination is observed annually on March 21st. Racial
and ethnic discrimination occur on a daily basis,
hindering progress for millions of people around the
world. Racism and intolerance can take on various forms:
from denying individuals the basic principles of
equality to fueling ethnic hatred that may lead to
genocide, all of which can destroy lives and fracture
communities.
"The Color of Fear" is centered on an electric and cogent
discussion of racism. The Center for the Healing of Racism is screening the 90 minute film directed by,
Lee Mun Wah, a nationally acclaimed lecturer on
diversity. Lee Mun Wah is a Chinese American who in his
film, "The Color of Fear" brings together North American, African
American, Latino, Asian American and Caucasian men for a
dialogue about the state of race relations in America
through their eyes. In 1995, Oprah Winfrey did a
one-hour special on Lee Mun Wah's life and work that was
seen by over 15 million viewers internationally.
"The Color of Fear" won the Gold Medal for Best Social Studies
Documentary.
Because of his work and contribution to the
elimination of racial discrimination and dialogue on
race the Center will be bringing to Houston and honoring
Mr. Mun Wah at our 2011 Juneteenth Ally Award Luncheon
on June 18th.
