This is the letter for the elected to invite. I'me going to send tomorrow and do a quick first round of calls. Please send me your edits ASAP.
ALSO, Maria, can you double-check what I put for your title and background (I was going to put "Rock Star" but I thought it might be too informal for this letter). Also, I want to make sure I have Ester King's description correct. Tarsha, do we have any other Commissioners confirmed?
LASTLY, should I just have organization names on the bottom or should I put individuals with their organizations? Thanks! -Crystal Z
Dear Honorable : Racial and religious profiling is a pervasive problem that affects many communities across the country, even in our great City of Houston. In response to the continued trend towards racial profiling around the country, over a 100 national and local organizations have signed on to the “Racial Profiling: Face the Truth” Campaign. We would like to invite you to join us for the Houston Hearing on Racial Profiling on Saturday, June 12, 2010 from 10am-2pm at the Shape Community Center at 3909 Almeda in Houston. This hearing, similar to those being held across the nation, will allow local communities a chance to testify and call attention to the real impact that racial, ethnic and religious profiling have on a diverse array of people. These local testimonies will be documented and published as part of a national report by the Rights Working Group to assist in making recommendations for the revision of the Department of Justice Federal Guidance on Racial Profiling. The event is sponsored by the national Rights Working Group and several dozen national and local Houston-based organizations including the NAACP, LULAC, OCA Houston Chapter – Organization of Chinese Americans, the Service Employees International Union, the Houston Interfaith Worker Justice Center, the Houston Peace and Justice Center, CRECEN, America for All, Council on American-Islamic Relations, DAYA: Serving South Asian Families, Grassroots Leadership, OG1 – Youth Outreach organization, Alianza Mexicana, Shape Community Center, Tejano Center, Tejas, and WHEW- Women Healing Empowering Women. Your presence is requested to participate and hear critical testimonies from members from across the city of Houston from diverse backgrounds and the real impact that racial profiling has had on the daily lives of Houston residents. Presiding over the hearing will be national and local Commissioners including Margaret Huang, Executive Director of the Rights Working Group, Thomas A. Saenz, President and General Counsel at the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), Maria Jimenez of America for All and publisher of numerous papers on immigration and human rights abuses, and Ester King of the SHAPE Community Center. While traditionally thought of as targeting the African American community, profiling affects a broad range of communities, including Native American, African American, Latino, Arab, Muslim and South Asian communities. Not only is racial and religious profiling humiliating and degrading for the people subjected to it, it is unconstitutional, it is an ineffective law enforcement practice, and it damages community security Please join us for this very important event that will be attended by various leaders from across Houston and, most importantly, members of our community impacted by acts of racial profiling in our city.
