This past Wednesday the Senate Committee on Transportation and Homeland Security gutted HB12 'Sanctuary Cities' and changed the language to that from SB 9 - another bill that we do not support. For more information, see the attached document or the bottom of this email.

Now, we are asking you to please make a call to legislators today and forward to your contacts to do the same.

Ask them to "Oppose ALL Versions of HB12 and SB9."

Oppose All Versions of SB 9 and HB 12

Higher fees for a Texas Driver's License will put a financial burden on all Texans that, because of other budget cuts to DPS, will not improve customer service at Driver’s License offices.

DPS employees should not be asked to screen immigration documents and make complicated immigration determinations for individuals seeking a Driver’s License.

Texas should not mandate local participation in the federal Secure Communities program, under investigation by the Department of Homeland Security for failing to target serious criminals and instead transferring thousands of non-offenders and even crime victims into immigration detention.

It is fiscally, economically, and morally wrong to prohibit cities, counties, school districts, police chiefs, and hospital districts from establishing policies that protect the public safety of cities, the ability of children to learn, and the ability of essential services to be provided to all residents. There are times and places where asking immigration status questions are not appropriate and it is the place of a responsible local government entity to set limitations in this area when necessary.

Legislators should be extremely cautious of legislation and amendments that have not been vetted by both chambers and their respective committees. Broadly opposed controversial legislation, such as SB 9 and HB 12, invite an endless stream of unexamined amendments to the determent of more pressing legislation in the last days of session.
