Ive had my little sticker-business for 2 years now, while studying at the same time. I've been using the Silhouette Cameo with Silhouette Studio. It treated me very good, but while my business grew, the cutter became too small.
You are welcome, and i did post the wrong link and have corrected it. Looks like your other post follows a similar path. can you try "printing" it as a pdf without saving it as a jpeg. Then hopefully it might embed the vectors in a file. I have never used Silhouette studio so i won't be of much help.
Looks like you need to find Silhouette Studio 1.9.0d and purchase a "Designer Edition" upgrade card as this is the only version that allows the .studio file to be exported to an .svg files. They deleted this feature in updates of the program.
I am going through this right now also. Are you using a mac or a PC? Like what Jarrotto said, it is my understanding that if you have the most current upgrade and the "Designer Editions" you can save your files as a .svg file, however this seems to only work on PC's. I use a Mac and do not have this option.
I have looked for a lot of ways around this on the internet, and the only way I have figured out is is to take my file in silhouette and fill it in with a color and print it, then (on a mac) you have an option to select .pdf in the print box and save as .pdf it is a lot of steps. I think these are similar to the steps in the link you posted earlier from the catscrapfever blog.
Thank you for your inquiry. The Silhouette Studio is only currently capable of exporting (or saving) into a STUDIO file format, which is the native proprietary file type for the software. There are currently no other file types that the software can export or save.
If you may wish to provide an image to a non-user of the Silhouette system to view how the program you are working on appears, you may opt to take a screen clipping (as directed at -
a-screenshot.org). This will allow you to create a PNG or JPG file, as may be desired. There is not a method of exporting a vector file for other software programs. We are sorry for any frustration this may cause. We will relay the desire to see such considered for potential future updated versions.
Does anyone know if the above posted info is still accurate? I need to get several hundred traced files from Silhouette Studio into Graphtec Studio. Both are products of Graphtec Corporation and it really makes no sense to have virtually identical software programs that are not able to open each others' files. Ideally, I'd like to be able to use the CE6000 with Silhouette Studio. Anyone know if this is possible?
I just tried something that you may be able to do, I have Flexidesigner which is also it's own format. FS.. I opened Flexidesigner imported a Flexi file, Highlighted the file and copied it. I also had Graphtec Studio open and out of the way a little, I was able to paste that Flexi file into Graphtec Studio.
You could try this also, Although I don't know anything about Silhouette.. You can download Graphtec Studio now from the Graphtec website,,,, Have both programs open .minimize them,.. Copy from Silhouette and see if you can paste into Graphtec Studio. If it works for you, you would not have to change every file at one time, but maybe as you use them..

I noticed that Silhouette also saved as a GSP *gsp.. file, in drop down box. And I tried that also. Because Graphtec Studio shows it imports *gsp files. ...It didn't work for me... I tried changing the file to GST, That didn't work..
I wish we could get this figured out or be able to cut straight from Silhouette Studio. I am having problems with the graph tech studio changing the size of my images before it cuts! EER I have 50 shirts that need to be done by this weekend and i work a full time job and can only work on them at night. I have wasted 3 yards of htv and want to throw my machine out the window, though it's a little too large to fit!!!
MK Creations called Graphtec and asked about the Graphtec Studio Pro. They told her that version isn't out yet. I have an older Adobe CS2 and was trying to learn that with Inkscape also. Also, all the vector files that are posted here eps, svg, etc don't open in Graphtec Studio (at least for me). The Adobe CS2 opens them fine though. When I make a simple word or phrase in GS and cut them out, and then try to save them, the ONLY option for me is Graphtec Studio. Seems like they are a little proprietary
I don't actually think it's possible to open a Studio file anywhere else. But I've printed from Studio and turned off the registration marks so it just looks like a normal document.
I'd love to know if Studio files can be converted, though.

I use my Microsoft Snipping tool which I believe is a free download. It takes a screenshot (better than the screenshot key!) of anything I outline by dragging. Then I can save it in a variety of options like .jpg or .png which I can then open in PhotoShop Elements. I do that frequently so that I can save a file as a "photo" and see what all the studio and GSD files look like without having to open them.

Yes, the captures are only 72 ppi. However, Lori, you can print right from the Silhouette screen. You could scan your print at the desired ppi, save and re-print it. Go to Microsoft downloads and do a search for the Snipper Tool.

I convert to PDF in order to open and modify/cut from Illustrator:
- Install a PDF creator program - I use the free program PrimoPDF
- Open or create your .studio file, select the shapes you want to convert
- Open the Line Styles dialog, check the "Print Lines of Selected Shapes" box
- Print your design to the PDF printer - this should generate a PDF file for you
- I then open the PDF file in Illustrator and work from there

I was excited to read ksaeger's tip, but then realized PrimoPDF doesn't work with Macs. BUT, then I realized that with a Mac, when you have a file open in the Silhouette software, you can choose Print to PDF (you might have to click on more options under the main Print menu) to create a PDF. The first few times I tried it, it didn't work, and what finally made it work was filling the shape with a color. My main reason for wanting to do this is I was using a playing card box design and I wanted to be able to put certain designs on just the box front and back. So by creating a PDF, I could open it in Photoshop, fill the solid shape with digital scrapbooking paper/elements or whatever, then save that as a PNG and bring it back into the Silhouette software, where it perfectly fits the cutting shape. I will post pictures soon!

Sorry girls, but I am confused... Why do you need to send it, convert it, change it etc. when you can do digital fills and embellishments right in your studio software and print from there. What am I missing ??? Why take the extra steps... What is the advantage to saving it as a PDF???

AlEnz56: I'm still new at this, but from what I was finding, when I try to fill a shape with say, a digital scrapbooking paper, in the studio software, there is not a lot of control. So if I drag a paper into studio, it just plops into the shape I'm using. That's fine if you just want to fill a shape with one pattern/paper (though I find that you don't have much control, even if you "pan" and move the paper around, it creates weird edges and repeating patterns)
What I wanted to be able to do is have the front of my box one color/image/pattern, and the flaps and sides a different color. So there was no way to do that, unless I could figure out a way to design the whole thing in photoshop and then bring it back. Does that make more sense?

Hello hollyrh,
You can do that right on your sil work page. If you just open your image/digital paper/embellishment onto your work page instead of dragging it into the image to fill then you can put it exactly where you want it to be. Then go to your modify window and crop it. I have made numerous boxes and such with different patterns on each side/flap using this method. Just make sure that you have replicated your original image a few times on your work page in case you lose some of your cut lines. Then just bring the original image back over your finished/filled design. Align, group, then print, and cut... Easy peasy... I also print an allover pattern on the back side of my page so that there is a pattern on the inside of the box too... Makes it look more finished.

To clarify my explanation a little... The easiest way for a "squared" box is to just layer your digital papers behind the image, lining the edges of the paper to the cut/fold lines. I then use the cutting tool to get rid of any excess print outside the box so I don't waste my ink. Or you can treat each section of your box as an image. If I have a box that is simply made up of squares or rectangles, it is easy to replicate those shapes with the drawing tools, fill or crop with a digital design, and then move back onto the original image. If you have curved flaps or other shaped sections (such as the heart shaped box) replicate your original image as many times as needed to crop sections and then move them back into the original image. It sounds much more confusing than it really is.
Hope this helps.

Wow thanks, ladies. Y'all are experts on studio! One of the reasons I need to convert my files to a .pdf or .jpg is to use them in other programs! For example, I've learned to design in .studio (it's pretty basic) better than I can in illustrator. Until I learn all the ropes there, I like making things in .studio that need to be printed , but not cut, and if I want to add heavy duty text, with shadows or anything other than plain text, I've really got to use it in a text editor (heaven forbid i don't have my spell checker).
Thanks for the amazing tips!
