Do obtain book covers from Amazon.com (consistent with Amazon's acceptable use policies, of course), is an Amazon development partner key (at least that's what I call it) needed? If so, where is this key located in the Helios configuration files?

There isn't a key. The images are set to come from Amazon, but they
are just there as an example method for pulling covers. I'm not sure
what Amazon's use policies are these days.
