We saw Madras Cafe last night, here is my take on it
Same Director Shujit Sircar earlier gave us Yahaan - based on Kashmir situation and delectable Vicky Donor - brilliant movie, one of the funniest movies in recent times with great dialogues capturing nuances of delhi punjabi culture brilliantly.
Unlike Hollywood, it is very rare in Bollywood to make political thriller movies based on real life events. Madras Cafe is one such movie that is based on Tamil liberation movement in Srilanka and assassination of Rajeev Gandhi. The movie is extremely well made with excellent screenplay, razor sharp editing and good background music. There is hardly any unwanted scene in the movie, whole movie is very fast paced and still brings out bureaucracy quite well. This is very non Bollywood movie and that perhaps is one of its biggest strengths. There is no glorification of hero, there are no fight sequences with hero taking on several bad guys, there is no attempt to cash on the glamour
and charisma of John Abraham, he comes out as a dependable RAW agent. There is no heroin, a female reporter that always replies in English even when people speak to her in Hindi plays important role. There is no comedy track, no item song, no family melodrama still it seems the movie
The movie makers have cleverly avoided some unpleasant facts such as involvement of Tamilnadu politicians in the plot, making references to family background of ex Prime minister, the 'foreign hand' is also downplayed.
The movie captivates attention slowly, starts with the cliche of a man in perpetual state of drunkenness and trying to escape from his past but the biggest problem is the first person narrative, it makes the movie uninteresting and boring. Another problem is too many events happening at the same time and it takes us some time to understand & link the events together. Second half is where the movie truly scores, we get accustomed to the fast paced story telling and plot also becomes little easier to understand, we get totally engrossed in the movie even though we know what is going to happen at the end of movie. The end is abrupt with some loose ends and unanswered
questions.
Overall a sincere movie, one of the better ones we saw in recent times
