Telugu (తెలగ) is a Dravidian language spoken by the majority of people of Andhra Pradesh & Telangana in southwestern India, and by significant minorities in the states of Odisha, Karnataka, Tamil nadu, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Andaman and Nicobar Island.

Telugu belongs to the South-Central Dravidian language group. This group also includes Kannada, Tamil, and Malayalam. Among these languages, Telugu is closely related to Kannada. It is written from Left to Right and has 52 letters in which there are 16 Vowels and 36 Consonants.

If you need to enter some text in Telugu, Windows includes an Input Method Editor and keyboard layouts that let you enter text using the Telugu script while using a typical keyboard with 101-105 keys. Using the IME doesn't require changing your current Windows display language.

The Windows system tray shows which keyboard layout is currently active, for example, ENG. You can switch between installed layouts (layouts in the Preferred languages list in Settings) by selecting the Windows logo key + Spacebar.

To type తోట, select the Telugu Phonetic IME from the system tray. Then type thota with the English keys. As you type, you can see how the IME turns the text into word suggestions. When you're finished typing, the top suggestion is the correct Telugu word. Select Enter to convert the English letters into Telugu script.

I have come across a few questions on the forums here asking for Phonetic Transliteration using schemes such as Baraha for different Indian Languages on Mac OS X. Unfortunately, no good answers were given (probably none existed) and the forums are now archived. Having lived through the dark days of trying to use various non-phonetic QWERTY keyboards, I decided to write my own open-source Input Method Engine (IME) called LipikaIME: _IME.

LipikaIME supports Bengali, Devanagari, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Tamil and Telugu scripts using ITRANS, Baraha, Harvard-Kyoto, Barahavat and Ksharanam transliteration schemes. Mappings are documented here: _IME/wiki. Additionally, you can add your own language or transliteration scheme using LipikaIME's configuration files. You can also use GoogleIME's SCM file format ( ) to introduce your own transliteration scheme.

LipikaIME works on Mac OS X 10.8 and above. You can download the installer here: This application is not in the Mac AppStore because custom installers, which are required to get any IME to work on OS X, are disallowed - some day I may think of a way to work around this.

Telugu (తెలగ) voice typing is an easy method of typing. This is a very good option for those who want to write Telugu without using any keyboard. All you need is a good mic, set up the mic in your computer and start speaking, the Voice to Text typing tool will recognize your voice and automatically start typing Telugu. After voice typing, you can copy it and use it on MS Word, social media, comments, Telugu articles etc. Please share it on Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp and help us reach more users.
