Hi Steve,
I usually use a combination of spices (in various mixtures taken from
cookbooks) and sometimes cook them with a small amount of vegetables for a
little extra flavor. Also, around here there is something known as
"speedies" which is a dish using meat chunks that have been marinated in a
mix of Italian dressing with extra spices added. Some Italian dressings
contain a lot of oil but I have found and used "fat free" Italian
dressings with success as well. You might also want to try marinades
using soy sauce or something similar. Even a small amount can add a lot
of flavor.
Take care,
Kris

Interesting theory. I noticed in Ian King's newsletter a couple of months
ago that he had an excerpt of Mel Siff which made Poliquin look foolish.
It was from some newsgroup. In any case my guess is that Poliquin is paid
a shitload more to work with hockey players, etc. than to write articles
for t-mag. So the choice is easy. By the way have you tried Androsol?
Also I liked your article on power cleans. When will you be featuring
again? Cheers, Peter
<<
True ... in fact, from my inside source I know that Poliquin made over 2
millions dollars last year. I have also heard through the branches that
Poliquin might start his own supplement company and online training
consulting (which would explain his new web site).
No, I must say that I haven't tried androsol and have no intention of doing
so ... unless I get it for free (and even then ...).
Thanks a lot regarding the power clean article. It's in fact the first of a
15 articles series on olympic lifting (the second one has been uploaded at
www.ironmag.com yesterday).

Steve:
The original Renewtrient-type products (ie Blue Nitro) are illegal to sell
as dietary supplements. They are not illegal to sell as towel cleaners,
parts cleaners, etc. This is how many companies are still selling the
product under a new name/label. It clearly states not for human
consumption, but it is the same stuff as before, thus minimizing any
liability for the company. The reason these products were banned by the
FDA is because they are used as party type drugs and have been involved in
serious health complaints (although people were often taking a variety of
drugs, so pinning the blame on GHB is inaccurate).
I couldn't find any info on Renewtrient II. If it is anything like any of
the countless GABA, GHB, GBL (dihydro-2(3H)-furanone, here is the scoop:
All of these agents are supposed to increase the release of growth hormone.
I would view GH stimulation as a positive benefit. It is thought this
occurs either 1) via binding to GABAergic receptors to various receptors on
neurons in the hypothalamus or anterior pituitary and/or 2) stimulation of
dopamine release. Since GABA can not cross the blood brain barrier very
well, GHB and GBL (precursors to GABA) are better options since they can.
If we only looked at GH levels, we might make the mistake of viewing these
agents as potentially useful. (I made this mistake previously). However,
if we look at the anatomy of the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary, there
are receptors all over the place on various neurons. We find the all of
the GH releasing agents above can also stimulate prolactin release. While
GH may stimulate the production of reproductive hormones (testosterone and
estradiol, depending on one's sex), prolactin would tend to have the
opposite effect (decrease production of the same hormones).
Additionally some of the latest information I have been reviewing indicates
that these agents may decrease TSH and/or TRH resulting in lower thyroid
hormone levels.
Since brain neurochemistry is very complicated, there are many things to
consider. It is conceivable that some people may be able to take GHB/GBL
and increase GH far more than they increase prolactin and/or decrease
TSH/TRH. These people may see some mild effects on decreasing body fat,
nothing spectacular. For other people the same supplement will increase
prolactin and decrease TRH/TSH levels so much that taking it would be
stupid. In both groups, the effects will also vary due to all sorts of
other factors, such as ratios of protein to carbohydrate in the diet (this
could effects serotonin and/or norepinephrine levels in the brain), amount
of exercise, and timing of exercise, sexual activity, etc. Basically
anything that effects the levels of neurotransmitters in your brain, can
have an impact on the effects of GHB/GBL. When researchers study these
agents, people are fasted, rested, and kept in quiet conditions to control
stimuli which might influence the results.
One thing that is certain is that you will get a "buzz" from taking these
agents. At this point I think it is simply due to excess dopamine
production. This is temporary and so far does not appear to be a problem,
unless an overdose occurs or taken with other agents acting on the CNS.
If you are serious about performance enhancement, don't waste your time on
these types of products. The major attraction for most people is the buzz
they get and the accompanying loss of inhibitions, so they are free to make
random errors in judgment. This is why it is such a popular party drug.
This is based on my practice in south Florida where I have seen numerous
cases of people using these drugs indiscriminately.

How about shredding the breasts after grilling, then wrapping them in a
warm corn tortilla with a tasty salsa or chutney. Are you avoiding all
carbs or just sugars?

There are several bottled salad dressings that make good marinades. One of
my favorites is Wish Bone "Oriental" dressing. Best Foods has a new line
of dressings out called "Citrus Splash" that look promising. Coating the
chicken with BBQ sauce and bake wrapped in foil works well. Depending on
how tightly you seal the foil the chicken is more or less moist. Old
fashion Shake N Bake is OK on occasion.
Up scale grocery stores often carry some "prepare" chicken that you cook at
home. Good way to go if you want to treat yourself to Chicken Cordon Bleu
with out all the prep work.

Hello Chris, Paul Chek here. I am currently in London running an internship
at the Harbor Club in Wandsworth. The only gym I have found that is
adequately set up to do real weight lifting, or shall we say, "the only gym
where the members are not nicely dressed with make-up on" it called the
"Power Zone". It is right at the foot of the Putney Bridge across from the
movie theater. It is on the second floor and the name of the gym is as big
as life, painted across the windows. It's a simple gym, but has a good
selection of dumbbells, squat cage, cable system, and the usual hardware
that just gets in the way of good training.
Hope that helps,

Renewtrient (as well as InnerG, Serenity, and a host of other similar GBL
precursors) to help me sleep when I'm dieting. Good stuff, I don't buy the
GH releasing claims they make, but I've never slept better. Unfortunately
(since butanediol & furanone are no longer legal) it seems that supplement
companies are eager to get a "new" Renewtrient/InnerG, etc. out. I've seen
Renewtrient II and Solar Water...essentially they are 50mg of
Diphenhydramine HCL in a liquid form with some amino acids and glandular
extracts in a "proprietary blend". The cheapest I've seen them sold for is
$50. Now, the Diphenhydramine can be bought at any drugstore for about $8
under the name Unisom (or other generics--I get a hangover from the stuff,
never did with the GBL, though), and as far as the other ingredients, I've
always hated it when companies say "proprietary blend" and do not list the
amounts of the ingredients contained, so I'm gonna assume there isn't
enough of them in there to make a difference (at least not an additional
$42 worth). So what you are left with is basically an overpriced bottle of
liquid Unisom. I wouldn't waste my money. Ryan

Hi, Haven't been posting on the list for quite some time now,
but I have a question for those more qualified than I to answer regarding
a cholesterol test that I recently took. This has some bearing on Weights,
since I have trained (although not constant all the way) with weights for
almost 4-5 years. First, some background on myself: I'm a 24 year old
Asian male in my final year in a Biotechnology course. I work out at the
gym 2-3 times a week, run off and on, go hiking and camping a couple of
times a year, and am also a regular weekend rock-climber. I'm 5' 5 1/2"
and weigh 70 kg. A friend was running a research project on lipid
profiles, so I thought I'd get a free reading because a previous reading
about 2 years ago showed me as having high cholesterol. This are the
results I got back: CHOL: 6.4 mmol/L HDL: 1.45 mmol/L TRIG: 1.9 mmol/L
LDL/CHL: 4.1 mmol/L TC/HDL: 4.4 (total chol / HDL ratio) A friend of
mine (a doctor) told me that my blood cholesterol readings are considered
pretty high, especially for my age and level of fitness. I'm not all lean
and trim, but I'm not exactly obese either. I suppose I want some opinions
regarding these readings, and some possible solutions to reducing these
levels. Also, some opinions on how I might alter my workouts to help
reduce these levels (maybe more cardio etc?) My friend suggested a more
cautious dieting plan and another check in 3-4 months. Any other opinions
Thanks. Regards, Jason K

I wonder if folks would mind sharing dumb, bonehead moves that they have
made in the gym. After I made one, it got me to wondering what other
folks have done.
Me first....
I was warming up doing light dumbbell presses (30 lbs ea). I did a
couple of reps and all the sudden my nose started to itch. The *smart*
thing to do would have been to put the weights down and then scratch my
nose. But *NO!*, Mr. Genius thought it would be ok to just kinda lower
my left hand down to my nose with the dumbbell still in my hand and do a
little scratch'n!
What a *STUPID* move! I felt my shoulder pop and I instantly went into
extreme pain. I had the presense of mind to sit up and put the weights
down. I sat on the end of the bench and I ALMOST PASSED OUT! I did go
black for few seconds and found myself on my knees on the floor.
I felt like such an idiot. Luckily, it was 05:00, so hardly anybody was
in the gym. I had to just stop my workout and go home before I even got
started.
That happened about 5 months ago and my shoulder still hurts to this
day! I really have to be carefull with it all the time. It really
pisses me off that I hurt myself over something so stupid.
Alright, anybody else?

I have been told that "Renewtrient II" is actually Benedryl. As a
Corpsman, I used to give small dosages to Marines in the field that
couldn't sleep. Use of this product for GH release sounds pretty lame.
This wouldn't be good for a Bee Sting Kit either because of the possibility
of a swollen airway and aspiration. I have often thought that if a Muscle
Mag promoted battery acid as something that would make you "huge", many
people would be adding it to their post workout shake. -Paul

Subject: Supplementation Question
From: Joost db <joos...@yahoo.com>
Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2000 23:19:32 -0700
Hello my name is Joost de Bonth, I am 18 years old and I have a
question regarding proper supplementation. I decided to ask you
because your webpage looks very well thought out and I feel you can
offer good advice with your background and knowledge.
I have been working out around 3 times per week for around 1.5 years,
taking only protein shakes as supplementation. I have noticed some
gains in strength and size, but not at the rate I was hoping for. Some
friends of mine were taking creatine combined with protein, andthey
were noticing some better gains. Next year I leave to college, and I
plan to stick to a more strict routine and take different supplements.
I have bought a book on creatine, and as a result of this I have bought
2 kilos of creatine, which I figure should last me a year with what the
book recommends as proper dosaeges. I have also bought 250 .5g
L-Glutamine tablets very cheaply on a special discount not really
knowing what they were really.
I was wondering what combination of supplementation is best. Should I
workout 3 times a week and take just creatine and the L-Glutamine
tablets or add protein shakes or amino acids to this. Perhaps there
are other safe natural supplements which would be better. Is this
combination safe? What are possible sideeffects? Should I just stick
with protein shakes? If you do recommend taking the L-Glutamine or
amino acid supplements, what time of the day should I take them? And
how much?
I realize that these are alot of questions to ask you, and I thank you
for your time if you do decide to answer them.
