by Gerald Cinamon

Rudolf Koch (1876-1934) was one of the foremost typographers, type
designers, and letterers in Germany during the 20th century. He was also a
brilliant illustrator and book designer. This important study of his life
and work is the first authoritative reference that chronicles Koch's life
almost month by month and includes numerous articles written by him that
have never been published in English. In addition, this work has over 300
illustrations which fully demonstrate Koch's genius from his early days as
an illustrator to his memorable years using the wood-cut medium, his
breathtaking lettering, and his influential type designs.

Koch was inspired by the lettering of Edward Johnston and by the
productions and activities of William Morris. In 1911, he founded his own
private press, designing and lettering its publications, and in 1921
created his Offenbach Werkstatt which brought to Rudolf Koch and his
skilled co-workers deserved world-wide esteem.

Five years of research by the author, Gerald Cinamon, a professional book
designer and typographer, have culminated in this unique and definitive
work. Its thoroughness will be useful to readers - in addition to the
fascinating text and fully-integrated illustrations, the author has
provided complete lists of Koch's typefaces, Koch's writings, a detailed
bibliography of Koch's private-press publications, a useful bibliography of
the contemporary journals and books used by the author - even the
directions to Koch's grave near Frankfurt!

This critically acclaimed biography belongs in the library of anyone
interested in typography, book design and calligraphy. Co-published with
The British Library.
