Has anyone come across a nice photo of some set metal type? You know the
kind of thing: a 'nice' photo...
I'm willing to pay a little, but not a lot, so if anyone has seen one among
a royalty-free collection anywhere, do drop me a line (off list, if
preferred).
Many thanks,
T

You got me curious, so I just did a search at e-bay for "metal type" (exact
phrase) since they often have stuff like that for sale, along with
pictures, and I came up with this...
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=364186166
...in fact, I have a feeling a lot of you here might flip over that item!
There's pictures up there -- and I'm sure if those suit your needs the
seller would let you use them, or maybe even take shots that would be
exactly what you need.
But check out the description for that item...
Printers cabinet with 1,700 pcs various type
Hamilton Manufacturing Co. Metal type cabinet with
24 drawers full of various sizes and fonts of wood
and metal type. There is more wood type than metal.
The cabinet measures 22" deep x 35" Wide x 43 1/2"
tall. There are approximately 1,700 pieces of type.
I counted 1,714 pieces but I may have missed a few.
No bids on it yet, with the opening bid at $900.
That's it. No doubt many of you are drooling already, and so I suppose that
my work is done for the day. ;) You might have better luck finding pics up
there, though -- like I said, I just entered in "metal type" on the main
search page and chose "exact phrase", and that's what I found! I stopped
looking at other search results that came up in my query after I saw that one.

I think I have seen a good selection of metal and wood types in a royalty-free
collection.
About three months ago, as I was casting about for punchy ideas for a layout, I
considered using images of type, and I found them at one of the big stock photo
sources. I remember the metal type being Cheltenham. The selection included both
individual letters and groups of letters locked up in a form (i.e., not strewn
around loose and pied out).
I think it was PhotoDisc or EyeWire.
They both have web sites and you can download PDF files of the contents of their
CD ROMs. It was there somewhere.
