UNIVERSITY OF LIMERICK, IRELAND
Call for Applications
The Mary Immaculate Department of Philosophy in conjunction with its
Department of English Literature and Language is now accepting
applications for academic year 2007-8.
Taught MA in Philosophy & Literature
The programme aims to show how contemporary philosophy and literary
studies and theory can work together in productive and illuminating
ways. The MA should appeal to those with a background in philosophy
and/or literature (broadly conceived), particularly those keen to update
their knowledge of recent developments in the disciplines.
The objectives of the programme are:
* To provide a post-graduate academic qualification in the areas of
Philosophy and Literature.
* To give a sense of the interdisciplinarity between the areas of
Philosophy and the study of Literature.
* To develop critical and imaginative thinking in both areas and to
facilitate critical engagement with contemporary issues and questions.
* To introduce the techniques and strategies for study and research at a
post-graduate level.
Course Content and Structure
The programme consists of six taught modules and a 20,000 word
Dissertation.
There is a compulsory module on Research Methodology. The remaining five
modules-not all of which will be available every year- are selected from
the following: Philosophy and Subjectivity: From the Modern to the
Postmodern, Literary and Cultural Theory, Introduction to Hermeneutics,
Literary Aesthetics, Post-Colonial Theory and Literature, and
Existentialism and Literary Realism.
The programme can be studied fulltime over one year or part-time over
two years.
Why study in Limerick?
Mary Immaculate College offers a unique and stimulating programme in a
small, friendly, academic community with excellent opportunities for
studying at postgraduate level.
The college is close to Limerick's attractive city centre and the
excellent academic and sporting facilities of the main University of
Limerick campus.
Limerick is surrounded by some of the most beautiful and unspoilt
scenery in the whole of Europe and yet, because of its close proximity
to the international airport of Shannon, is also within easy reach of
major cities and centres of population.
