Dear Colleague,

Together with Dr. Ainsley Newson (University of Sydney), I am organizing the 2nd iteration of the Summerschool: “What about the Family - An interdisciplinary course on the impact of genetics and genomics on families.” The Summerschool will be held in Groningen, Netherlands, from 12- 18 August 2018.

This Summerschool will explore new theoretical and practical approaches to address the challenges posed by responsibilities generated by new forms of healthcare practice. In particular, we will examine the significance of people’s key relationships (such as with family and community), and how people deliberate and decide about their responsibilities. As a special field of interest, we will focus on issues arising from the use of genetic and genomic technologies. Family is inherent to the field of genetics, because information can often only be meaningful when considered in the context of a family. But genetics itself can also lead to new forms of kinship and dependencies.

Themes to be addressed include (1) what ‘family’ means; (2) negotiating responsibilities; (3) familial roles in decision-making; and (4) justice within families.
- Participants will enhance their knowledge and understanding of the theoretical approaches to ethics of families, and their applications, especially with respect to genetics and genomics.
- Participants will have many opportunities to present their own research and benefit from feedback from internationally renowned scholars.

The Faculty staff consists of Prof. dr Jackie Leach Scully, Newcastle University; Prof. dr Veerle Provoost, Ghent University; Prof. dr Christian Munthe, University of Göthenburg; Prof. dr. Kristin Zeiler, University Linköping; Prof. dr Bobbie Farsides, University of Sussex; Dr. Ainsley Newson, University of Sydney, Prof. dr Marian Verkerk, University of Groningen.

The language of instruction will be English.

The Summerschool will be of interest to participants from diverse professional backgrounds, such as bioethics, philosophy, social science, medicine, genetic counselling, nursing, psychology, allied health, and theology, and to PhD students undertaking courses of study in these areas.

Detailed information on the program, application process and course fees can be found at https://www.rug.nl/education/summer-winter-schools/summer_schools_2018/what_about_the_family/

The deadline for application is 1 May 2018.

Best wishes,
