*Inaugural Meeting of the *
*European Network on Social Ontology*
*University of Constance, Germany, Oct. 16-17, 2009*
The analysis of the structure of social facts and institutions is one of
the key topics of current research in philosophy as well as in
neighboring disciplines such as economics, sociology, psychology,
cognitive science, legal theory, history and political science. The
European Network on Social Ontology aims to provide a platform for
interdisciplinary discussion and exchange among scholars working in the
field, as well as to initiate and to coordinate future research
activities on the European level.
The inaugural meeting of the network will be held at the University of
Constance, Germany, Oct. 16-17, 2009. All parties interested in joining
the network are invited to participate.
In addition to discussions about possible coordination between ongoing
research projects in the general field of social ontology and collective
intentionality, and the exploration of possibilities for the initiation
of new programs, a small workshop with a limited number of presentations
will be organized.
The general topic of the workshop will be:
*The Background of Institutional Reality*
*Call for papers:* Institutions only work against a background of group
identities, culturally accepted norms, practices and stances, and
biologically basic capacities for joint action and attention. We invite
proposals for presentations from all relevant fields and disciplines.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
- Analyses of institutions from different philosophical (e.g.
phenomenological or analytic) perspectives, as well as from sociological
or political science perspectives
- Conceptions of the background in different authors and
theoretical traditions
- The role of shared intentional attitudes in the creation,
maintenance and collapse of institutional reality
- Emotions and institutions
- Analyses of joint attention, action, belief and intention
Abstracts should contain no more than 500 words. Please prepare your
