Location: Deelenhaus, Krämerstraße 8-10, 33098 Paderborn, Germany
The present event of the interdisciplinary cycle of seminars “Philosophy in
the Media/Philosophy on Stage” focuses on the famous and universally
talented philosopher Émilie du Châtelet. The grande dame of the French
Enlightenment Émilie du Châtelet maintained a long lasting literary dispute
with her enfant terrible, Julian Offray de La Mettrie, which reached its
peak in their writings about happiness. In three short multimedia plays the
students perform elements of Émilie du Châtelet’s and Julian Offray de La
Mettrie’s moral philosophy works and is based on the seminar with Ana
Rodrigues, University Paderborn.
With the interdisciplinary project “Philosophy in the Media“ the philosophy
in Paderborn breaks new grounds. The project provides more than just
learning and teaching philosophy via books. It was launched by Ruth
Hagengruber (philosophy), Gerhard E. Ortner (dramatic staging), Ulrich
Lettermann (music), and Bernhard Koch (filming) to present women
philosophers’ thoughts via student performances to the broad public. These
performances feature women philosophers and scientists as Emilie du Châtelet
(1706-1749), Ada Lovelace (1815-1852) and Elizabeth of Bohemia (1618-1680).
It won the Advancement Award for Innovation and Quality in Teaching 2014 of
the University of Paderborn.
