CFP: Philosophy of Life
We are creating an edited volume on the philosophy of life and are
seeking original, unpublished articles, of approximately 5,000-7,500
words, addressing the following question: What new approaches are
being made to the study of life-philosophy? Too often, life-
philosophy is taken to be a mode of self-help or motivation and not a
genuine philosophical movement. Although it is not recognized as
such, serious and provocative work is being done on life-philosophy in
phenomenology, existentialism, ancient philosophy (spiritual
exercises), the philosophy of biology, deconstruction, American
philosophy, and elsewhere. Accordingly, the scope of this volume is
broad, and we intend to publish articles from various philosophical
traditions.
We want to collect exemplars of this work into a single volume. Our
goal is not only to resuscitate the tradition of life-philosophy (as
we see, for example, in Dilthey, Bergson, and Nietzsche), but also to
extend it, showing how innovative and original interpretations of
philosophers from the ancient to the contemporary reveal new ways of
thinking about life. Possible (but not exhaustive) topics: What does
the study of life-philosophy contribute to our understanding of
philosophy, itself, the nature of the human being, the ideas of
history and temporality, ethics, aesthetics, religion, technology,
biology, and evolution?
