First, I have read that we need to configure and recompile our kernel
for our needs. This is said to make the machine cleaner and tighter.
With the latter being said, how should i compile my kernel for a box
just acting as a firewall/router/dmz? what are the options i can take
out? what are the options i need to leave in or add? The server will be
passing the IPSEC protocol to the DMZ interface (Zone Segment) where a
VPN server lives. I will have to do some port mapping for a internal
segment as possibly re- directs to. The box itself will contain no
services like ftp, mail, etc.... it will just be a firewall/router. I
intend to put all servers like ftp, mail behind the box. What are all
the tools i need to install on the box to achieve this goal. I am
running the basic windows manager that comes with obsd so what is a
good (recommended) text editor that will run from this enviroment and
are there any good File managers for this enviroment. I am trying to
keep away from loading kde just for the editor and file manager.
Second, The box is a Dell (586) p166 with 32megs of memory and a 340
MEG.HD. Is this enough? It will just be routing a small network with 3
people on it and about 20 machines of which only about 9 need outside
access.
Third, Off the subject of the above. I loaded openbsd 2.8 on another
machine that will be my desktop. I tried loading The KDE 2.0 app. from
the packages cd via- pkg_add filename. It installed but i have no idea
where it went nor how to execute and start the app. Is there any
special changes that need to be made to make this work.
Thanks for any help and have a great Christmas.
