Linux Mandrake with intel e1000 / pro 1000 network card (nic) support

Dear reader,

I have a new Dell Poweredge 1650 machine (dual P-1100, SCSI, 2x intel
E1000 (1000Mbit) ethernet card) and can't get the nic's working.

The intel e1000 driver is installed ( i assume ) ; there do exists
some e1000.o module files... but when i do insmod e1000 it reports
the intel pro/1000 network driver (version 3.0.10) but also some
errors:

/lib/modules...../e1000.o: init_module: No such device

ifconfig eth0 also gives as output:
eth0: error fetching interface information: Device not found

I'm using mandrake 8.1 with kernel 2.4.8 and 2.4.18
Downloaded some rpm's and tar's from dell's site , installed them...
but no network ..!

Help/suggestions/answers/solutions would be welcome!
