I am not familiar with the OSS version that ships with RH6.2, but do you know if it is OSS/Linux or OSS/Free? OSS/Free doesn't have this time limit, which is great if it supports your sound card. OSS/Linux is a commercial product you have to purchase a license for.
Also, you can check out the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture drivers at http://alsa.alsa-project.org. The soundcard matrix lists support for the ALS120 chip set with their als100 driver. ALSA has it's own applications and mixers, links to OSS mixers and other fun stuff.

ALSA is free and it worked fine with my ALS 100.
