In its default setup, Ingres easily pulls twice as many updates/inserts
per time unit, and some tweaking brought that to a 6 times as many.
While Firebird *is* easier to setup and maintain, what I've found so far:

* Ingres performs *much* better on heavily loaded databases
* Ingres has way better support for subselects
* Unicode collations are more complete in Ingres than in Firebird
* Index width is severely limited on Firebird when compared to Ingres

On the other hand:
* As said, Firebird is easier to embed in an install
* It supports NYU (whether that's good or bad depends on your POV)
* It has support for pre-triggers as wel as post-triggers which allows
for some really neat validation/correction tricks.
