A customer's phone lines are down so I thought I'd help him out by
configuring his linux server to send his faxes over the Internet to my
Hylafax server.

When I ran faxstat I was alarmed that it told me it couldn't communicate
with Hylafax on localhost. I thought Hylafax was down or unstable so I
restarted it but still can't communicate with faxstat.

When I restart Hylafax I see it complaining about family not supported
by protocol. I don't know what happened on my Red Hat 9 server causing
this. Thinking with my Micro$oft hat (rarely ware it) I rebooted the
linux box but still have same problem.

Your HylaFAX init script may be trying to start hfaxd with the old protocol, no longer present in 6.0.3's hfaxd. Modify you init script accordingly.

Darren, throw me a bone here, what init script do I modify?

Ok, so I was thinking with my Austin Powers hat on trying to inject
some levity with the "throw me a bone here" comment.
Can someone tell me what script I could modify that Darren suggested below?

John,

I'm thinking he is referring to /etc/rc.d/init.d/hylafax init script on
the RedHat system, but I'm not 100% sure about the path in RH9.

The path is correct for RH 9.
I see FAXPORT=hylafax
in the init script. I changed it to
FAXPORT=4559
and restarted hylafax but faxstat still can't obtain status.

I suspect that you're hitting on IPv6 problems. See:
http://bugs.hylafax.org/show_bug.cgi?id=920

I'm not sure if this was fixed in 6.0.4, but it does not occur with
HylaFAX+ 5.4.2 (http://hylafax.sourceforge.net).

Thanks,

Lee.

Lee, good to hear from you. Unfortunately I am not using IPv6.
I am running 6.0.3, I'll upgrade to 6.0.4 to see if it fixes my problem.

You get a connection refused. Could you check what port hylafax is
listening on? Try this command

# lsof -p$(pidof hfaxd) | grep TCP
hfaxd 8800 uucp 3u IPv6 2358348 TCP *:hylafax (LISTEN)
# getent services hylafax
hylafax 4559/tcp

the first one give you the port name, the second one check what port
number this port name refers to.

Bye,
Giuseppe

Some other useful inofmration might be:

1) How are you starting hfaxd? Using distro-suplied script, etc?

2) Can you show us how it's running:
ps -ewf | grep hfaxd

3) Similarly to Giuseppe's lsof:
netstat -antep | grep hfaxd
That needs to be run as root

a.

When I compiled Hylafax it placed an S97hylafax in my /etc/rc.d/rc5.d
directory. It starts on boot in run level 5. If I restart I use
service hylafax restart.

I downloaded 6.0.5-rc1, it compiled and started but still having the error:

Can not reach service hylafax at host "localhost".

Lee, are you suggesting I should roll back to version 5? No one seems
to have a fix for 6.0.x.

Yes I am. (Although HylaFAX+ 5.4.2 is not a "roll-back" from
hylafax.org v6.0... for example, note that HylaFAX+ 5.4.2 has the
ability to send color faxes which doesn't exist in 6.0.x. See:
http://hylafax.sourceforge.net/about.php)

I'm at a loss as to why faxstat still can't talk to hylafax.

The problem displayed in your setup is that hfaxd doesn't listen on any
TCP port. I don't know how this might happens, but lsof does show this
behaviour.

I did ask you to issue this command, but I couldn't find if you did it:

# getent services hylafax
hylafax 4559/tcp

As you can see, on my system, the "hylafax" port is tcp/4559, so I
wonder what is that settings in your system.

Still, whatever port it "hylafax" is, hfaxd does not bind to any port,
so it could be worth to better check what it does.

Could you also issue this command while hylafax is stopped?

# /usr/sbin/hfaxd -i hylafax -d

does it show any error? Does faxstat work when hfaxd is started this
way? Does it change if run the hfaxd command as user "uucp"?

And, could you post any customizations you might have done
in /var/spool/hylafax/etc/hfaxd.conf ? Do you have any LogFacility and
ServerTracing settings in that file? Could you check what logging was
done by hfaxd according to these settings? Could you increase
ServerTracing and try again?

Bye,
Giuseppe

Having run faxsetup /dev/ttyS0 and entering all info all over again it
finished by running faxmodem /dev/ttyS0
Now faxstat communicates. Was this all caused by faxmodem not starting???
