I am a newbie with Hylafax and have been struggling for a couple of weeks trying to set it up. Ideally I would like to set up the server to send and receive faxes, have the email to fax setup and the vmail server. At this point I am looking into having the send and receive faxes working.
I am using Ubuntu 9.04 Server, Hylafax V6.0.3 and the modem is an external serial modem Zoom 14400.
I am able to connect to the modem using "cu -l ttyS0" execute several AT commands including a test dial using tones. Therefore from what I can tell it seems to be working.
When I start faxgetty it tries to connect but from what I can tell the modem is not responding. Below is the syslog.
probemodem and faxaddmodem works before I start faxgetty. Then the modem becomes unresponsive afterwards. Not sure how to disconnect it (resetting the modem does not do the trick). Inittab had only faxgetty. I do not know how to find the process that is keeping ttyS0 busy or locked.
$ cu -l ttyS0
cu: open (/dev/ttyS0): Permission denied
cu: ttyS0: Line in use
Initially I set it up as a type 2 using faxaddmodem. I couldn't get it to work so I set it up now as a type 1 modem but it still does not work.
Any help would be appreciated as I have been banging my head on this and searching all over the place for information that can lead me to the problem.
Thanks in advance,
Frank

At this point, when you know that the modem is working, when
faxaddmodem/probemodem are successful in talking with the modem, and
when you have problems with faxgetty talking to the modem, then start
thinking that maybe ModemRate is possibly at a setting that is not
compatible with your serial hardware.
Try changing ModemRate in your modem configuration file to 38400 or
maybe if you trust flow control to 115200.
Thanks,
Lee.
I really appreciate your help. You are the only one that has responded to my post and I don't know what else to try.
The modem does not respond to higher speeds when I use "probemodem -s 115200 ttyS0". If I use the 19200 speed the modem responds to probemodem fine.
I am attaching the configuration files that I have tried (1 at a time) for type 1 and type 2 as well as the output of probemodem. Please let me know if there is anything else that may help. From searching the web it seems that type 1 has better chances for working under Hylafax. I am currently using Type 1.

~$ sudo probemodem ttyS0
Now we are going to probe the tty port. This takes a few seconds,
so be patient. Note that if you do not have the modem cabled to
the port, or the modem is turned off, this may hang (just go and
cable up the modem or turn it on, or whatever).
Probing for best speed to talk to modem: 38400 19200 OK.
This looks like a Class 1 and 2 modem.

Regards,

After you get your modem configuration file made edit it manually and
change ModemRate around a bit. Try 38400. Try 19200. Try 115200. Try
57600. Let me know those results.
> I am attaching the configuration files that I have tried (1 at a time) for type 1 and type 2 as well as the output of probemodem. Please let me know if there is anything else that may help. From searching the web it seems that type 1 has better chances for working under Hylafax. I am currently using Type 1
Your probemodem result makes it look like the Class 2 capability of the
modem is actually broken anyway.
Thanks,
Lee.
At this point, without connecting on to your system to poke around
myself, I am out of ideas as to what could be wrong.
Thanks,
Lee.
