Submissions are sought for a panel discussing the relationship between
cinema and the avant-garde for the RETHINKING THE AVANT-GARDE conference
at Notre Dame University, April 13-15, 2000. This panel will explore
questions regarding the role of various avant-garde movements within
cinematic production (including Dada, Surrealism, Neo-realism, New Wave,
New German Cinema, and Dogma 95). We are particularly interested in the
intersection between aesthetic content and political ramifications as well
as discussions that focus on the relationship between cinematic
avant-gardes and the forces of production. Papers surveying the
boundary between modernism/postmodernism and the potential for
an avant-garde cinema are also welcome as well as discussions of race,
class, gender, and sexual orientation.
Keynote speakers for the conference include Martin Jay, Marjorie Perloff,
Susan Rubin Sulieman, and Krzysztof Ziarek, with responses from Gerald
Bruns and Fred Dallmayr.
Please send a 200-300 word abstract (by e-mail if possible) by October 15,
1999.
