One stereotype will have to go: That the French are masters in taking care =
of
their own cultural heritage. In one long barbaric act between April 7 and
April 18 this year, quite the opposite will become apparent. The auction
house Calmels Cohen will sell all artworks, photographs, books, and objects
that Surrealism’s founding father André Breton amassed in his studio on=
Rue
Fontaine 42, Paris. Between 1922, two years before his first surrealist
manifesto until his death in 1966 the address was the home of the Surrealis=
t
headquarters, a worldwide organization and the major art movement of the
twentieth century. The over 5,000 lots are expected to bring in about forty
million dollars.
Yes, Breton’s space was an incredible mess that no more than five people
could possibly enter at the same time, impossible as a public place. To be
sure, the French have preserved the house of Victor Hugo, Gustave Moureau=
’s
tiny museum is still intact (a shrine for the Surrealists), Brancusi’s st=
udio
was recently rebuilt in front of the Centres Pomidou and the house of
Proust’s aunt outside of Paris has become a site of continuous pilgrimage=
.
Not so Breton’s place. From an economic point of view it could not be
maintained through entrance fees alone. Breton’s wife Elisa knew this yet
kept the place in perfect disorder until her death in 2000. Breton himself
never mentioned anything in regard to the future of his cramped
‘wunderkammer’-appartment and now his daughter Aube, lacking public fun=
ding
for a Surrealist Foundation, has decided to give it all away after trying f=
or
years to establish the place.
The anger today is not so much directed towards her as towards the French
government. An online petition for the preservation of Breton’s studio re=
ads
in part: “We find the very idea of this event to be to the shame of the
French Government, and contrary to the best accounting of the History of th=
e
Twentieth Century. Together, the manuscripts, books, objects, and art withi=
n
Andre Breton’s studio at 42 Rue Fontaine are very different from other =
‘great
collections.’ Together, they represent a global Idea the likes of which h=
as
never before been seen in Europe or elsewhere. Together, and only together
they create a Marvelous Site with more historic significance than many in
Paris.”

recent figurative paintings by David Fertig and Lori Taschler in its uptown
gallery at 1014 Madison Avenue. There will be a reception on Thursday,
February 13, from 6 to 8 pm. A concurrent exhibition of works by Geoffrey
Swindell will be on view at JG | Contemporary's Chelsea space at 505 West
28th Street. David Fertig's boldly rendered oil paintings depict battle
scenes relating to the Napoleonic era. Large galleons clash in plumes of
cannon smoke, and groups of soldiers and horsemen engage in combat. While
these exalted moments of conquest and defeat call to mind the Romanticism o=
f
Delacroix and Gericault, Fertig's loose, energetic brushwork has its roots =
in
modernist abstraction. Fertig represents specific events, but the prevailin=
g
themes of his painterly canvases are action and emotion. While Fertig
portrays historical dramas, Lori Taschler creates quiet interiors.
