Here in the USA, “pre-war” would generally bring up the idea of the inter-war period between the First and Second World Wars. World War II still looms far above any other conflict in terms of our perspective on history. Not even our Revolutionary War or our Civil War grant any ready sense of a “pre-war” period; such eras are pretty much the turf of historians anymore.

It's the same in Greece. "The" war is World War II, and "the" occupation is
the German occupation of 1941-1944, even though Greece had been under Turkish
occupation for centuries, and many would argue that, before the Turks, Greece
had been under Roman occupation for even more centuries.
