I interested in provding DL for a post-graduate audience and need a reliable
real-time discussion forum (chat) feature and a threaded message board that
can be set up on my web site. Ideally students could enter through the web
site and access, with password, these features. I've no interest or ability in
providing technical help for these features once they're set up. Out source
possibllities? Thanks in advance.

You may wish to take a look at Web Crossing by Lundeen Associates.
(http://www.lundeen.com) It has both live chat and threaded discussions.

We initially used this in our MPA program
(http://www.gcsu.edu/acad_affairs/coll_artsci/gov_soc/VINSON/) that we
deliver to the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, currently in the Persian
Gulf, as an extension to the weekly VTC class time.

Over the past year we have expanded it both to our local & distant graduate
and undergraduate programs with an astounding degree of success as measured
by student achievement & satisfaction and also by our faculty's
satisfaction with the process. During the Fall '98 semester, we had over 60
courses using it in some sort fashion with almost 2,000 of our students
participating. Our discussion pages had over 300,000 discussion views of
the over 12,000 student/faculty individual posts that were made during the
semester. Use of the discussion areas range from weekly postings, online
discussion, online testing, individual portfolios and entire graduate level
courses being taught with it.

The live chat feature is used most often as an online "Office Hours" area
for students to meet with their professors and for learners to meet with
each other outside of class to seek and dispense help to one another.

One of the very nice features WebX has for an educational setting is that
you can assign different levels of access within a discussion. You may set
up "host" access for your faculty. "Participant" for your students. You may
also allow guests and other registered users to view or you may block them
from the course area completely.

Feel free to visit our Georgia College & State University WebX server and
take a look around if you like. You will find it at
http://jasmine.gcsu.edu/webx?gcsu. To access, just click on the "Guest"
button and feel free to browse. You will find the course work in the
"Colleges & Schools" link.

Hope this helps!

Harold

HyperNews sounds good for you.

Cal State Northridge has a server where all of the bulletin board material is
kept. When the student clicks on the bulletin board, it sends her to Cal State's
server. You can access their site at

http://www.vcsun.org/

click on hypernews, and you can read all about it.

The person to talk to at CSUN for setting it up is John Hartzog.

For message boards go to this URL:
http://www.cgi-resources.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/Bulletin_Board_Me
ssage_Systems/

I know it's a long address, but I've been using one of these message
boards for almost two years without any problems.

As far as chat, I've been using VolanoChat: http://www.volano.com

It's a Java-based chat that we've also been running for a couple of
years without problems. You won't go wrong with any of these solutions.

Best,

Lee

You could try WebBoard. I've used it in two graduate level courses and it is
relatively easy to use.

You might want to consider Convene at http://www.convene.com/
They supply the technology to the University of Phoenix and Baker College etc.

Does anyone have experience using (or plans to use) ClassPoint Student and
ClassPoint Teacher software by White Pine http://www.wpine.com ? I'm
considering its application in a distance learning project to begin in
September. Thanks.

I'm looking for a free listserv host for a small e-mailing list (30-60
students). I remember seeing something like this on the Web, but can't
find it now. Any suggestions?

Sorry for any cross-postings!

ICEF in Germany, who organise the Online Educa conferences each year, are
organising the first Distance Learning Exchange which will take place in
Miami from the 26th to the 27th February. Based upon the same model as the
highly successful student recruitment workshops run by ICEF, ( held in
Berlin, Singapore and Miami each year), this first Distance Learning
Exchange will be held at the same time as the Americas Workshop, the yearly
Pan-American Student Recruitment Workshop which was attended by over 1000
participants in 1998.This first Pan-American Exchange brings together
invited representatives of institutions interested in purchasing distance
learning courses for their students with providers and suppliers of such
courses. During the two days of the Distance Learning Exchange, distance
learning providers e.g. universities, schools, colleges, vocational
training institutes, software companies, content developers and publishers
acting as 'sellers', present their programmes at fixed tables where they
are visited by selected "hosted buyers". As "hosted buyers", ICEF invites
representatives of universities and other educational institutions,
distributors, government services as well as service and training
institutes interested in purchasing distance learning courses, programmes
and/or software. To date over 60 Latin American universities from
Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, Trinidad and Venezuela are confirmed
as "Hosted Buyers. For further information contact ic...@aol.com

Hi --

I am writing an article for Converge magazine (www.convergemag.com) that
compares
the cost of developing and teaching on-line courses and providing student
support
services (library functions, tutoring or TA help, bookstore, counseling,
registration etc...) with site-based education. After a couple of interviews I
have
heard that, generally, on-line courses cost more to develop and as much or more
to
teach. However, few people can give me even ballpark numbers. Has anyone done
any
cost studies on on-line courses? Is there anyone who would be willing to talk
off-line about their experience developing, teaching and administering on-line
courses? Thanks.
