R. Arcangeli, M. C. Lopez de Silanes, J. J. Torrens:
"Multidimensional Minimizing Splines. Theory and Applications",
Kluwer Academic Publishers, Boston, 2004,
hardbound, 280 pp., ISBN 1-4020-7786-6.
Also avalaible as e-book.

http://www.wkap.nl/prod/b/1-4020-7786-6

This book is devoted to the theory of D^m-splines and some of its
applications to the approximation of surfaces. The D^m-splines over an
open subset W of R^n are multidimensional minimizing splines, that is,
functions defined on W, subject to interpolation or smoothing
conditions, and which minimize an energy functional involving
derivatives of order m. When W is R^n, the D^m-splines are the splines
introduced by J. Duchon. These D^m-splines are known as thin plate
splines or, more generally, polyharmonic splines. The point of view
adopted in this book is different from that of
J. Duchon, in the sense that the notion of reproducing kernel is not
used. This approach allows the rediscovery of J. Duchon's results and
also the obtaining of supplementary results relative to convergence and
error estimates.

Then, following the procedure used for D^m-splines over R^n, the
authors treat the topics concerning the D^m-splines over a bounded
domain and their approximants of finite element type, called discrete
D^m-splines.

The book finally focuses on several surface fitting problems which
arise in oil research and geophysical sciences, paying special
attention to the approximation of faulted explicit surfaces. Through
detailed theoretical discussions and numerical examples, the authors
show how discrete D^m-splines can be satisfactorily used to solve these
problems.

This book is meant for mathematicians, geologists, engineers and, in
general, researchers and postgraduate students involved in spline
function theory, surface fitting problems or variational methods.
