GENERAL INFORMATION
Overview. The tenth biennial SOSP sponsored by SIGOPS, the ACM Special
Interest Group on Operating Systems, will bring together an active group
of workers who enjoy debating the tradeoffs between pragmatism and prin-
ciple. As the boundaries between computer architecture, operating sys-
tems, applications, and communications shift with rapidly changing tech-
nology, those tradeoffs continue to present new challenges to system
designers.
Symposium Site. Rosario Resort is on Orcas Island, Washington. The
closest major airport is Seattle/Tacoma. There is transportation to the
island either by San Juan Airlines or by ferry from Anacortes (100 miles
north of the airport, a two-hour drive).
Hikers may enjoy nearby Moran State Park. Tennis, golfing, and sailing
are also available. The Music Room at Rosario houses a 26-rank pipe
organ which is used in regularly scheduled concerts.
Proceedings. The proceedings will be distributed at the symposium and
published as a special issue of the Operating Systems Review. Papers of
particular merit will appear in ACM Transactions on Computer Systems.
Registration. The SOSP has proven very popular recently, and a large
number of participants is expected. We expect that most rooms will
require double occupancy, and that only registered participants can be
accommodated. Despite these measures, registration may still have to be
limited, probably by limiting attendance from those organizations that
propose to send many representatives. For this reason, all applications
for registration, with a check for payment in advance, must be received
by October 1, 1985. Notice of registration acceptance, and full refunds
for anyone not accommodated will go into the mail shortly after that
date. The all-inclusive fee of $415 ($435 for non-ACM members) covers
symposium costs and proceedings, three nights of lodging (Dec. 1,2,3),
seven meals (breakfast 12/2 through breakfast 12/4), and a large first
night reception.
Transportation. The Washington State Ferry service to Orcas Island is
provided both from Anacortes, Washington, and Sidney, B.C. on Vancouver
Island. Anacortes is approximately two hours north of Seattle and two
and a half hours south of Vancouver, B.C. Participants have the option
of driving onto the ferry and then to the Resort, approximately a 25-
minute drive, or parking at either Anacortes or Sidney and walking onto
the ferry. Rosario will provide pick-up service to and from the Orcas
Island ferry landing.
We do not yet have the official ferry schedule. The phone number for
ferry information is (206)464-6400. The new schedule will probably be
available by 1 September. The tentative ferry schedule follows: The
ferry leaves Anacortes at 6:45, 8:45 and 11:15 am, and 3:45, 5:00, 8:10
and 9:10 pm. It will leave (tentative schedule) Orcas Island for
Anacortes at 6:30 and 9:00 am, and 1:20, 2:05, 6:00, and 7:00 pm. The
ferry trip takes over an hour and makes two stops along the way.
For a limited number of people flying on major airlines, the connection
to Orcas via San Juan Airlines can be purchased for a small additional
fee. People wishing to travel via San Juan should check with their
travel agents or airlines and be sure to book early to ensure space on
the San Juan flights. The flight from Sea-Tac to the Eastsound airport
on Orcas is about 45 minutes. Rosario will provide pick-up service to
and from the airport.
The Tenth SOSP may decide to provide bus service between Sea-Tac airport
and Anacortes for a small fee. If you are interested in this service,
please indicate so in the application form below.
