kristallnatt memory demonstrations in sweden
this years kristallnatt memory demonstration takes place 60 years
after fascist stormtroopers ran rampant in nazi germany. the echoes of
the crashing glass can now be heard in sweden. the french front
national has bankrolled the local election victories of the fascist
parliamentary party, the sweden democrats (sverigedemokraterna). they
have won positions in seven separate localities across sweden,
including two in the stockholm suburb of haninge.
stockholm:
despite bitter cold temperatures and an exaggeratedly extensive police
presence approximately 600 anti-racists and anti-fascists participated
in this years 9th of november demonstration. demonstrators marched
through the traditional workers quarters of södermalm in stockholm in
a torchlight procession that lit up the surrounding darkness. slogans
such as "no fascists on our streets" roared through the night. music
and speeches rewarded the demonstrators upon arrival to the centrally
located destination. this years demonstration stretched across
ideological boundaries and was a symbol for co-operation against the
common enemy of fascism and intolerance.
gothenburg
despite snow and wind approximately 700 participants from a large
variety of organisations honoured the memory of the victims of
kristallnatt in central gothenburg. along the central boulevard
"avenyn" buss drivers stopped and gave the demonstrators the "thumbs
up" symbol and onlookers joined in yelling the demonstrator's slogans.
150 individuals made up the antifascistisk aktion, afa, portion of the
demonstration. speeches were held and the mood was glad and positive.
not a single fascist (except those in police uniforms) was seen in the
area, in this otherwise heavily fascist-infested city.
uppsala
in this university city 400 individuals participated in a torchlight
demonstration organised by everyone from anarchists to mainstream
political parties. and not a fascist in sight.
memory demonstrations were held in a number of other swedish towns as
well.
