On Tuesday, Nov. 3rd, voters in the District of Columbia
voted on Initiative 59, to legalize the medicinal use of
marijuana and protect patients from arrest. Three days
later, the residents of the District don't know the results
-- because Congress has forbid the District government from
counting, certifying or releasing them. The ACLU has taken
legal measures to remedy the situation, but we won't know
what the courts will do until it's done -- and it should
have never happened in this country in the first place.
Please join a peaceful but angry protest in downtown
Washington, Tuesday, Nov. 10th, 12:00 noon, at One
Judiciary Square (Judiciary Square stop on the metro Red
Line). For further info on the protest, contact Anise,
ACTUP DC, at (202) 547-9404.
We know of no precedent in the history of this nation that
the results of an election have been concealed from the
electorate. This action on the part of Congress violates
the basic right of the people to petition the government for
redress. (While Congress would have the power to eliminate
the ballot initiative in the District altogether, they don't
have the Constitutional right to selectively ban one
particular question that they don't like.) So remember, you
are protesting not only for the right of medical marijuana
patients to be free from arrest, but for the preservation of
the Bill of Rights and democracy.
Stand up against drug warrior extremism! Join ACTUP, ACLU,
drug reform groups and other concerned citizens and PROTEST
THIS TUESDAY!
