(I sent this email to the F7 alternate group but bounced. So let me try again.)
Dear F7 Friends,
Just want to test this new group, and also to confirm that I will go to say Goodbye to our friend, although I’m a little bit afraid of going at first, but now since there are quite a few of us going, I think I can overcome my fear. I’ll drive there (it’s about 90 – 100 minutes driving), and if anyone wants to come with me, you are more than welcome.
Over the 30 years since I graduated from TsingHua, I have lost quite some family members (the latest was my father in 2009) and close friends, but I didn’t have chances to say Goodbye. Only one time, I went to say Goodbye to a friend, whom I didn’t know much, but helped me when I was having tough time just came to the US.
In any rate, let’s talk about what we can do. And please let me know what I should and need to do.
Just found the Obituary for Guowei:
http://www.muellerparker.com/fh/obituaries/obituary.cfm?o_id=1806967&fh_id=10916
On the web site, you can sign the guest book, send private condolence, send flowers, send sympathy gifts, and send sympathy cards.
I’ve been thinking a lot since last night. After our 30th Graduation Anniversary Reunion in July, I stayed in China until August. And after coming back to the US, I didn’t immediately contact Xiaoqing and Guowei, partly because I wanted to wait until my wife is back so we can go together (she is still in China due to family reason). But later I learned my wife won’t be back until sometimes later. So I contacted Xiaoqing in September, and we set the date on October 6 for me to visit them and to bring them their Reunion gifts (镇书) I brought from China. Now, thinking about this, if I would have delayed a little longer, I may have never been able to give Guowei the Reunion gift, and I would regret this for the rest of my life.
So, I want to say that, life is short, and there may not be many chances and opportunities left for us, so grab it before it’s too late. And our F7ers is a very special group of friends, so next time, when we have reunion, being it 5 years or 10 years, I’ll attend no matter what, no matter I have money or not, 倾家荡产也去; no matter I have to work or not, 辞了工作也去, anywhere I will go, 天涯海角也要去.
Thanks!

刚才还和何晓俞 (sorry, not sure my Chinese is right) 通了电话, 她们也可能来.

Jinhui,
Do you have the Amazon Payments account setup? If you do (and we do as well – I have), then it will be very easy to transfer money. We can pay you either using our credit cards or our checking accounts, with just your email address. As long as service/purchase payment type is selected, not cash advance type, it’s free both ways and for both parties.
Not sure about this on international transfer.
Otherwise, I will give you money when you come on Friday.
Thanks!
Yiping

Dear F7 Friends,
Just want to test this new group, and also to confirm that I will go to say Goodbye to our friend, although I’m a little bit afraid of going at first, but now since there are quite a few of us going, I think I can overcome my fear. I’ll drive there (it’s about
90 – 100 minutes driving), and if anyone wants to come with me, you are more than welcome.
Over the 30 years since I graduated from TsingHua, I have lost quite some family members (the latest was my father in 2009) and close friends, but I didn’t have chances to say Goodbye. Only one time, I went to say Goodbye to a friend, whom I didn’t know much,
but helped me when I was having tough time just came to the US.
And after coming back to the US, I didn’t immediately contact Xiaoqing and Guowei, partly because I wanted to wait until my wife
is back so we can go together (she is still in China due to family reason). But later I learned my wife won’t be back until sometimes later. So I contacted Xiaoqing in September, and we set the date on October 6 for me to visit them and to bring them their
Reunion gifts (镇书) I brought from China. Now, thinking about this, if I would have delayed a little longer, I may have never been able to give Guowei the Reunion gift, and I would regret this for the rest of my life.
So, I want to say that, life is short, and there may not be many chances and opportunities left for us, so grab it before it’s too late. And our F7ers is a very special group of friends, so next time, when we have reunion, being it 5 years or 10 years, I’ll
attend no matter what, no matter I have money or not, 倾家荡产也去; no matter I have to work or not,
辞了工作也去, anywhere I will go, 天涯海角也要去.
Thanks!

Sorry to continue on this topic.
I think maybe we should all get the Amazon Payments Personal account. I mean, if you have bought anything from Amazon in the past, you probably already have an Amazon account. All you need is a few more pieces of information, mainly your SSN, to setup (or “upgrade to” if you will) Amazon Payments account. It’s the same account, just extra features.
Once we all have the Amazon Payments account setup, then transfer money among us is very easy and simple. All we need is the recipient’s email address. That’s it.
Here is the Amazon Payments link, for personal account, they also call it Amazon Payments WebPay:
https://payments.amazon.com/sdui/sdui/personal
And here is a link talking about how to set up Amazon Payments account and how to transfer money, although it uses Amazon Payments for a different purpose, you get the idea:
http://www.extrapackofpeanuts.com/how-to-use-amazon-payments-to-meet-minimum-spend-requirements/
It seems that people outside of US can also send money here via credit cards, but I can’t fine any further details. So I’m not sure about the international transfer.
Yes, we can use PayPal to transfer money as well. But PayPal charges fees, while Amazon Payments Personal is free.
Just FYI, and certainly not try to hijack the primary thread and purpose here.
True.
But, that’s no different than your banks, credit cards, utility companies, and etc. I mean, you already have your SSN in many places, and if you already have Amazon Account, you already give them most of your information sans SSN. I don’t mean I’m not careful with my SSN. I’m very careful on that and very closely guard my SSN. And actually with Amazon Payments, you may save some places where you don’t have to give out your SSN unnecessary. And it’s a balance between security and convenience.
The reason I think Amazon Payments wants your SSN is for them to identify you, so that you don’t open multiple accounts and transfer money between yourselves.
And as the technologies evolve, we do and sometimes have to put more and more trust into those online companies and services, in exchange for conveniences. In the latest cloud technology, one paramount challenge is security, since people are putting their lives in the cloud (you know people not only put music, pictures, and videos in the cloud, but also many other things like credit cards, SSN’s, legal documents, user ID’s/passwords, and etc., etc.). Right now, I think Amazon is leading in the cloud technology.
Just my two cents.

Sorry, I’m sounding like an Amazon salesman. I’m not and I just want to give us a convenient, safe, and free option. That’s all.

I just saw you guys sending out banking information and people coming back asking this and that, all through emails. Actually, you know, email is the least safe means in exchange this types of information. Also, there may be fees involved. So I thought of Amazon Payments, which is safe, convenient, and free. And by far, it seems that it’s the only free means to send money to someone. I also thought many Chinese people (oh, maybe I should say: many Asian people) use Amazon Payments for varieties of purposes, and maybe many of us already have that. Sounds like you may already have the Amazon Payments, since you have the seller’s account and you need ways to accept payments, right?
Yes, sure, if anyone wants to use Amazon Payments to send money for the donation (only US residents, not sure if non US residents can send money via Amazon Payments), then you can send to my email address: yipin...@hp.com. Be sure to check Goods/Services if you are using a credit card; otherwise you will be charged cash advance fees by your credit card company (not Amazon, just like you use your credit card to withdraw money from a bank). You can also put some words in the Optional Note section to indicate the donation. Currently, my account has zero balance. So anything comes in until this Friday will be given to Jinhui as the donation.
Thanks!
