Hello everyone,
Inspirational school activities comes with the warm weather. The below is one of those:
Seed Stewardship at East Kensington Elementary
Sunflowers and watermelons were transplanted at the East Kensington Elementary with the guidance of the Farm Folk City Folk (FFCF). Students from grade 3, 4 and 6, led by teacher Vaughn Swenson, are part of the School Seed Stewardship pilot project conducted by FFCF with the support of Farm to School BC.
The pilot project aims to teach students basic seed saving biology and skills, and impart a sense of seed stewardship with a real life example. This is the second time students meet with FFCF. In March, they attended a workshop about seed selection and planning, and in June they met again to transplant sunflowers and watermelon plants. There was so much excitement
around!
After the summer break, students will meet with FFCF to harvest, clean and store the seeds that will then be available for the next year's students to plant and grow out.
Thank you so much to teacher Vaughn Swenson and Farm Folk City Folk team for making it possible!
