Dear friends

as we have defined the baseline of the manoeuvres being horizontal and
no longer parallel to the (potentially sloped) ground, we now need to
address the describing of the track of the model on the hemisphere
when it flies the top segment of square manoeuvres. So far, the rule
says tops have to be flown parallel to the ground, which, when using
the baseline as reference, is no longer true.

At first sight, it would seem consequent to replace „parallel to the
ground“ by „along the 45 degree parallel“ (The Merriam-Webster
dictionary defines the noun Parallel as being one of the imaginary
circles on the surface of the earth paralleling the equator and
marking the latitude.)

However, considering Keith Renecle’s recent findings carefully
illustrating the tracks actually flown, it might be advisable to
define the square tops as being flown along „great circles“ instead.

While the material difference between tracks flown along the 45°
parallel or along a great circle, at least when looking at a square
looping, is quite small and perhaps even insignificant, the same
difference will become considerable when looking at substantially
longer segments, such as the recommended manoeuvre entry and the 42°
level segments in the clover.

Please comment here on Google, your advice on how to define the top
segments mentioned above is of great importance. To respond, hit

I agree with the concept of what has been discussed. I believe we need
to update the rules prior to updating the maneuver descriptions
though.

Dear Friends

As we seem to come close to a solution where manoeuvres will be
described as flight tracks on a horizontally positioned hemisphere
only, i.e. no longer “parallel to ground” and not as “seen by pilots
and/or judges”, it now seems appropriate to me to open the discussion
on how to adjust manoeuvre descriptions accordingly, using the
terminology suggested on August 14th (Check “Files” for details)

To initiate the work we have to do on manoeuver descriptions I have
uploaded a suggestion on how to adjust the description of square loops
under “Files”, entitled: “Square Loops Suggestion”,

Please comment, bearing in mind that time available until we have to
submit our recommendations to the Sub-Committee has become a bit
short, meanwhile.

kind regards, Peter Germann
