I enjoyed the first race of this season, especially watching the Kimster deliver his second win. I don't think much can be gleaned from this race as to how the teams will fare long term seeing as the temperatures were well below what can be expected from future races. Nevertheless, with weather forecasts for Malaysia this weekend promising 40/50% possiblity of rain both for qually and the race, Kimi could well repeat his win.
The Ferraris look ominously quick and Mercedes seem to be better placed this year than last, with Lewis a joy to watch wringing the best out of his car. Nico was also very fast in early practice on a very wet track too. Sutil was a revelation especially as he's been out of it for 12 months but interestingly said that within 10 minutes of being back in an F1 car it was as if he'd never been away.
The Red Bulls appeared to suffer from a cool track but still look the team to ultimately beat once again.
Buy oh dear McLaren! Just what have you done by abandoning last years car in favour of a much changed new one for this year? Their excuse was that last years cars' development would have been maxed out by around the 4/5th race this year and they feared they would lose out as the season progressed. But doesn't this also go for the rest of the field? No other team appear to have changed their cars' basics as much as McLaren so does this mean JB and Perez will start to forge ahead as the rest reach their car's development ceilings? I can't see it myself.
If Malaysia proves to be as wet as is forecast, McLaren may fare better as wet circuits are a race leveller and JB is supreme in those conditions, but as for their fortunes in this years DWC and CC the writing looks already on the wall. Hope I'm way wrong!
