I don't have a preamp on the 58, so I've always had to hold the mic closer than you should. I've used SPITFISH in the past to get rid of some of the sibilance and popping ...
_______________

What is SPITFISH? That's a new one for me... Did you use it on your mixes, because I didn't notice this on your mixes. Of course there is a lot going on with the FX that it could have gone un-noticed in your mix.

Not using a preamp? So how are you recording with it if I might ask....

It records nicely for you with the exception of the popping. Might look into a preamp so you can back off just a bit to help this, and still have the input you want. You might try a popscreen too. That would be cheaper than a preamp.

58s have a screen under the ball, but it might not hurt to try an additional one if you really need to be close. I'm interested to know about this "SPITFISH".

Ok I jumped back in there and worked this a little bit. Still no EQ done yet. When I get to mix/master mode it should come to life. i may still have some more work to do on the leads. Will listen with fresh ears...

Glad you're feeling better.

This is really hot! I listened at work and that lead sizzles. Are you playing or sampling - you can't tell. I used to play my leads on a keyboard, got a pretty good Hendrix sound once.

I see my other post didn't make it: spitfish is a free vst from digital fish phones that catches sibillance - just google it. I record the 58 straight into a Behringer 1220?, into the pc via an M-Audio 2496 ....

Well as I had hoped the popping kinda became a non-problem with some EQ, and compression added to the track. I EQed a lot of the very bottom end out of it and the popping pretty much disappeared.

That behringer is not a good mic preamp per se, but it is a preamp. I use one myself. You should be able to back off the mic a little a give the input more gain.

I mean we know behringer is not top of the line but it's a decent stage mixer and is a decent preamp for that 58.

When i use the word "good" (in bold above) I mean by studio specs. But it's fine for home recording. I'm surprised you are not considering it a preamp, since you have gain control. But really since I was able to EQ is it feels like a non-issue now.

I have to get my mastering gear setup but I'm going to post a preliminary mix in a minute. Watch this space...

I already hear something I want to fix on my lead on the outro. I started the phrase a little late.

I will probably leave this alone for a few days for several reasons:

1. Just got bad news that an old friend of my wife and mine, died today. That's enough to take the wind out of my sails for a while. Funeral tomorrow.

2. Ears still not right after illness..

3. I need to clear my pallette and go at this fresh. Long day at the console today. I've made good progress I think. The outro has changed since your last listen. This mix is a good example of how it'll come to life. It'll be even another jump when I go into master mode. I want to let my ears guide me and have a somewhat trouble free heart after this news. Will take a day or so. In the meantime we can digest this preliminary mix.

Fred
You're being too nice to the Behrie people - the mixer and its frigging preamps is crap. The mixer crackles when I move the faders (has since year 1) and the gain is maximized. I've been saving for a real preamp for the 58, but keep spending the money on pedals ... You must know how it is, I only have a small allowance! 51 years old and I have an allowance ... Oh well, I also have 3 daughters 10, 11 and 14 ... what's more important? No preamp!~

I fixed that outro on the lead. Still a few things that stick out to me. We'll see how it sounds to me after some time away. I did a preliminary master too. Probably will change after some listening:

I did this mix/master while working on getting my stuff ready for the funeral home this eve. I am much happer overall with this, and probably could consider this a final. Crisper drums, vox, and timing tweaks. I'm open for feedback.

If you could clear out the folder for this (leaving the separates folder but empty), I'll post a new set of seps and we can move this into the mix/master part of the forum in case others want to offer up mixes... There are some excellent talents in this area (if they are watching).

Make sure you flatten your EQ on your playerback player when listening to this latest mix.

M/M sounds real good, Keeper! A couple of those licks in the 2nd verse were hair raising!

Thanks for your great work.

I will be posting the seps soon, and starting a new entry in the mix/master area of the forums for this project so any prospective engineers/mixers can have a go at it. All mixes can be posted on the finished page so we can compare and learn from each other. Notifications will go out so all subscribed will know.

Had a good time on this one and I think it came out well. I might do another mix after my ears are back to normal. It's looking like that will be after surgery.

Separate tracks are up in the "separates" folder now. I'm working my way to setting up the "mix/master" forum for them, but the seps are now available.

BTW: Timbo, did you notice that you have 10 gigs of storage for this acccount instead of the 5 I thought they would give you? I wonder if they have upped this limit for everyone. I'll have to check that out. That is outrageous for a free account! 4shared rocks!

Hey Keeper - when I signed up there was a link that said click here for another free 5 gigs and I done did click!!

I see the seps, I know I'm a pain, but can't the drums be posted as true seps as well: e.g. snare, kick, hat and cymbals? Pretty please?
